Jorge Says No!: Did the Twins Make a Mistake by Picking Up Michael Cuddyer's Option?

Odds & Ends: Cubs, Cuddyer, Eyre, Marlins
MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com —
... Let's check out a few Saturday evening links....
Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune writes that the Chicago Cubs appear prepared to part ways with Rich Harden and Reed Johnson.
ESPN.com's Rob Neyer isn't a big fan of the Minnesota Twins' decision to exercise Michael Cuddyer's 2011 option.
Potential free agent Scott Eyre will have surgery on his left elbow, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. Zolecki mentions that Raul Ibanez and ...
Twins Spending Habits
baseballmusings.com —
Rob Neyer takes a very nice shot at the Twins’ spending habits:
No, the difference between Cuddyer’s salary and his value is not a great deal of money. But the Twins have a history of overspending on decent players while complaining about the high price of truly great players. Remember, it was just a year ago that they couldn’t afford Johan Santana but quite happily blew $9 million on Craig Monroe and Livan Hernandez. And if they’re not able to keep Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer in the long term, their money mismanagement is simply ...
Did the Twins Make a Mistake by Picking Up Michael Cuddyer's Option?
Jorge Says No! —
$10.5 million for Michael Cuddyer in 2011! Rob Neyer is not a fan: "Cuddyer is a good hitter but a subpar outfielder, resulting in a player who is, at his best, worth less than $10 million. Granted, considering the $1 million buyout, the Twins essentially have committed to spending $9.5 million on Cuddyer in 2011. And $9.5 million isn't much more than what he was worth this year, and in 2007 (2008 was a disaster). Of course the problem is that Cuddyer has entered his decline phase. He'll turn 31 next spring and (more to the point) 32 in 2011. He ...
Weekend Update: Gonzo, Mauer, Bay, Harden
The Bottom Line —
... for 2010 over the weekend. It is believed that the Sox will continue to talk with Gonzo about staying in Boston at a lesser price. Some feel that Gonzalez's offense (or lack there of) could be a problem, but Gonzo hit .284 with five ding dongs in 44 games with the Sox. I'm not concerned. Sign him and us Lowrie as the utility infielder. The Twin's picked up OF Michael Cuddyer's $10.5M option for 2011 on Saturday. That means they will be paying Cuddyer $8.5M in 2010 and $10.5M in 2011. At 30 years of age, Cuddyer showed surprising power this season with 32 homers, but that's a ...
Cuddyer is Coming Back
"MyTeamRivals" via MyTeamRivals.com in Google Reader —
... As reported in the Star Tribune, the Twins picked up Michael Cuddyer's option for 2011 (Yes, you read that right. 2011. It's an interesting clause in his contract). Predictably, ESPN's Rob Neyer jumped all over the decision: No,
the difference between Cuddyer's salary and his value is not a great
deal of money. But the Twins have a history of overspending on decent
players while complaining about the high price of truly great players. ...
Seagulling the Michael Cuddyer Option
Over The Baggy —
... I’m not convinced that extending Michael Cuddyer was as heinous a decision as ESPN.com’s Rob Neyer made it out to be. Without a doubt, Neyer raises some good points. Neyer recognizes the face value problem of extending a 32-year-old, he examines the piece not the whole. The organization is committing $10 million dollars to an aged player -- one that has already exited his peak playing years -- and is likely to see his offensive numbers decline while, at best, hoping his defense does not decline further from 2009 (where he ...
Indians: A Lazy Sunday Around The Central
Ohio Sports Report —
... 2010 and is looking to lock up their hometown hero, their best player Joe Mauer past 2010, his final season under contract with the Twinkies? How's that for a watershed off-season? The Twins have already been active with their addition of JJ Hardy (who figures to get a raise from the $4.65M he earned last year through the arbitration process in the hopes that he can improve on his .659 OPS from a year ago in Milwaukee) and by picking up the $10.5M option on Michael Cuddyer, a move seen by ESPN.com's Rob Neyer as a confusing move in a long line of "double-standard" contracts ...
