The Road to Moscow . . . on TV
Published 8/14/2007 by soccermad at Soccer Mad In America
As much as I love watching the powerhouses that are Newcastle and Bolton duking it out, it's the Champions League that gets the blood boiling in my house. Mrs. BL finds it cosmopolitan of me that I'm able to yell at foreign players on the tube, sometimes even pronouncing their names correctly. As the early days of domestic seasons scramble with their schedules to accomodate CL qualifying, domestic tournaments and WAG events, trying to figure out just what's on TV is daunting. Here's what I can piece together of televised CL qualifying for this week. Tuesday, August 14 Rangers v. Red Star Belgrade 2:45 pm ET Setanta PPV Benfica v. Copenhagen 3:15 pm ET Setanta PPV Wednesday, August 15 Toulouse v. Liverpool 10:30 am ET GolTV Sparta Prague v. Arsenal 5:00 pm Setanta Sports ET (delayed) Third Qualifying Round Previews [UEFA]

Champions League day 2 - Lazio fight back to tie Real, and Milan’s terrible Serie A form extends to Europe
Published 10/3/2007 by Marco Pantanella at mCalcio.com
... We’re deep into the depression era at AC Milan: three consecutive draws in Serie A… then the first defeat at the hands of Palermo… and then another draw vs. Catania this week-end… the only competition which remained without blemishes for the Rossoneri was the Champions League. After tonight’s defeat vs. Celtic, another milestone has been reached: Milan is officially the richest team in the poorest of forms right now. ...

UEFA Champions League Matchday 4!
Published 11/6/2007 at City Pages - Balls! Sports Blog
... The UEFA Champions League is back--and American viewers will once again get the chance to take in four matches via ESPN. Today it's Liverpool fighting for its group stage life against Turkish club Besiktas (1:30 p.m., ESPN2). The English side has managed a paltry one point from its first three matches. Then it's Real Madrid visiting Olympiakos (4 p.m. ESPN Classic). The Spaniards have been flying recently in La Liga play, with Robinho and Guti in particularly impressive form, but they stumbled against a resurgent Sevilla side on Sunday. Unfortunately tomorrow they're showing Manchester United at home against Dynamo Kyiv (ESPN, 1:30). The Ukrainians are yet to register a point and were whipped 4-2 at home by Cristiano Ronaldo and company in the last round. This will surely be an unwatchable drubbing. Then its Rangers visiting Barcelona (ESPN Classic, 4 p.m.) The Scottish side received lavish praise for tying mighty Barca ...

... WW in this case stands for ‘Winning Wagon’, a train which, judging the current Serie A standings, did not have many Rossoneri or Biancocelesti on board this year. Champions League day 4 - Inter and Roma Fight Back from Behind to Clinch Valuable Points
Published 11/8/2007 by Marco Pantanella at mCalcio.com
... It could have been a perfect matchday for Italian clubs: after Lazio and Milan obtained their 6 points on Tuesday, it was Inter and Roma’s turn to get on the winning sheet and give Serie A a perfect 12 out of 12 for day 4 of the UEFA Champions League. A little mishap however forced the Giallorossi to give up 2 points against their Portuguese opponents, and give Italy only a 10 out of 12 at the end of day. Still pretty good. The highlight of the day wasn’t however the point total that Serie A teams achieved on matchday 4, but ...

Champions League Day 5 - AC Milan Through to the Next Round, Lazio Now Need a Miracle
Published 11/29/2007 by Marco Pantanella at mCalcio.com
With Inter and Roma already through to the next round, it could have been “carton plein” for Italian teams in the Champions League. Alas, only Milan achieved their objective today, and there’s going to have to be some serious miracle work for Lazio to pull through in the last round.
In Lisbon, Benfica was a real tough nut to crack for the Rossoneri, but in the end the 1-1 final score is enough to send AC Milan through to the next round, and eliminate the Portuguese team. All goals were scored in ...

Champions League Day 6 - The Bernabéu Verdict is Harsh: Lazio Forced to Wave Europe Bye Bye
Published 12/11/2007 by Marco Pantanella at mCalcio.com
Like KwSport adequately put it, this match could be titled “M like ‘Madrid’, but not like ‘Miracle’“. Up to the first 30-40 minutes of play, any Lazio/Serie A fan watching the match unfold at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, must have been sinking really low in his/her sofa. The Biancocelesti were not only down by 3 goals, they were being schooled by an absolutely ruthless Merengues team who took everything away from their opponents, and gave back nothing in return. Then the ...

... has been a bundle of nerves, the football has veered from the tedious to the heart-stopping, and the results have been totally unpredictable.
But things have changed this season at the Bernabeu. There is a pattern, a logic, to the way Real are playing and for the first time in four years they look as though they could be serious challengers for the Champions League once again.
Certainly it’s hard to imagine anyone relishing the thought of getting them in the draw for the first knockout round on Friday*.

The pub is always packed when I head there for games.
