Big Wave Dave Actually, I believe the worst call in post-season was Don Denkenger's bad call at first base in the '85 World Series, causing St. Louis to lose to Kansas City. Not going into details ... check it out yourself ... but Cardinals were robbed that night. Terrible call. -
Big Wave Dave Uh ... it's spelled "umpires" with a "u".

18 Possible Explanations for Tim McClelland’s Incompetence
Bugs & Cranks —
Tim McClelland had a REALLY bad night last night. Monumentally bad.
Think about it. How often does a third base umpire get embroiled in so much controversy during the course of a single game? Once a year, tops? Usually never in a game of this importance. But there was old Tim, standing at third base, blowing really easy calls.
Big League Stew went as far as to deem one missed call as the Worst Ever.
What did Tim McClelland have to say to say for himself? Our new gal Emma Span has that covered for us.

Today's links could have been all about Tim McClelland, except he seems like a nice enough fellow so I'll cut him some slack ... after I'm finished ripping him! My biggest problem with The Worst Call of All Time isn't that McClelland blew it. Even the best umpires miss one occasionally, and McClelland was up-front about everything after the game. My problem is that nobody corrected him. OK, so maybe McClelland was screened by ...
Tim McCelland Watches the Replay

... Link via Big League Stew. Why he got the first call wrong was pretty obvious to me. His eyes were up, so what he caught was the ball coming into the glove and the movement of Swisher’s body. Swisher started the movement of his body before the ball was caught, but his foot stayed in contact with the bag. In fact, it was a perfect example of how a runner should move on a sac fly, so that when the ball is caught his body is already accelerating toward the plate. When I saw the first replay in real time, I thought Swisher left early. ...

Following the multiple umpiring mistakes, both last night and throughout the course of the 2009 post-season, the cries for expanded instant replay are getting louder:
Why McClelland possibly decided that Cano was safe despite not touching the bag until after being tagged is beyond this galaxy's rules of logic and it sent Angel Stadium into a bloodthirsty frenzy. There are simply no words for the ruling, other to say that one of the five other umpires should've offered his assistance, McClelland shouldn't ump another game in this series and that ...

... and Duk are right: the umpiring in game four was an embarrassment. I was simply speechless when I watched that play unfold. Seriously, what was Robinson Cano thinking? How was Cano not standing on third base. The call, though, was the most puzzling aspect of that series of events, and it was one of many horrendous umpire decisions on the night. ...

... Unfortunately, despite the fact that the postseason has had some pretty exciting games and interesting storylines, the top story once again is terrible umpiring, and a call Big League Stew is calling "the worst call of all time." I keep hoping that maybe, someday, Major League Baseball will be shamed into action on this issue, and do something to either correct inept umpires or put effective umpires in their place. It's likely a pipe dream. ...

... .) So Angels catcher Mike Napoli made the smart play and tagged both of them out, because neither one was on the bag. Except, for whatever reason, (he didn’t have a good angle on Cano; he expected them both to be on the bag which happens 99 out of 100 times on a play like this) McClelland called Cano safe. Bad call. Some are even calling it THE WORST CALL OF ALL TIME. (You can see video of it ...

... Sadly, it would only get worse, on a play in which Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano were both tagged by catcher Mike Napoli while standing next to third base. (Quick tangent: What could Cano possibly be thinking here?) Somehow, McClelland allowed Cano to remain at third, explaining after the game that he thought Cano was on the bag. Cano didn't end up scoring, but that didn't stop Kevin Kaduk of Big League Stew from calling it the worst call of all time. It's almost enough for you to wish McClelland would go back to calling plays based on what his heart tells him. ...

Sure, there were some standard blown calls, like the tag on Nick Swisher at second that was ruled safe, or maybe Nick Swisher’s leaving the bag early (thank god someone with bionic vision called that, because I couldn’t see it on the side-by-side replay…). By now you have heard of the numerous questionable calls made in last nights American League Championship Series game between the Angels and Yankees. There were a couple of calls that I usually consider just "bad luck" and being a part of the game, but there was one call that has my head scratching. It was egregious, and as Yahoo's "Big League Stew" proclaims, it is easily the worst call ever made by an umpire. If you haven't seen it yet check out the video below. ...

Jorge Posada respectively), Swisher grounds to the mound. The throw
from pitcher Darren Oliver comes home, catching Posada in a rundown
between third and the plate. The play apparently ends with two outs,
as Angel C Mike Napoli clearly tags both Cano and Posada while each
was standing a foot or more from third base. Thinking that Cano was standing on third, McClelland calls him safe and Posada out.
