Commissioner Roger Goodell Takes 20 Percent Pay Cut Amidst Layoffs
The Biz of Football :: Part of the Business of Sports Network — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that he is taking a 20 percent cut from his $11 million salary as the league deals with the impact from the economic downturn. The league offered voluntary layoffs, and to date has had 169 personnel do so. The layoffs have come from holding such as NFL Films, which laid off 21 of its 283 employees in March, followed by the league seeking another 150 “voluntary separations”. According to The AP, “The NFL announced Dec. 9 it would reduce its staff of 1,100 by 10 to 15 percent. Seventy-six people took buyouts while 45 jobs were eliminated and 48 openings went unfilled.” Goodell has the second highest commissioner salary behind MLB’s Bud Selig at over $18 million. ...

NFL Salary Cap to Increase to $127 Million for 2009

Teams did not spend as much as they were supposed to under the current collective bargaining agreement. The CBA is flexible in that the cap moves down if teams spend over the cap limit, and moves up if they spend under the cap limit. According to Schefter, this benefits the Colts and Panthers as they were bumped up against the cap going into ...
