Friday night's deciding Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBC Sports was the most-watched NHL game in 36 years with an average of 8 million viewers (5/10/73, Stanley Cup Final Game 6 on NBC, Montreal-Chicago, 9.4 million). Overall, the series averaged 5.6 million viewers for the five games on NBC, the best since 2002 on ABC (three telecasts, Detroit-Carolina, 5.8 million). The sale and relocation of the Phoenix Coyotes to Jim Balsillie won’t be occurring anytime soon, and possibly never, after a U.S. bankruptcy judge rejected his end-around offer of $212.5 million that would have bypassed the NHL’s relocation approval process. Arizona bankruptcy Judge Redfield T. Baum ruled that the accelerated timeline that Balsillie’s offer was contingent upon did not allow enough time to with several complicated legal issues such as a relocation fee to the league, and possible extra fees to indemnify both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres, both of which would be impacted by the relocation of the Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Jerry Moyes, the principal owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and his legal team gave reaction to yesterday’s ruling by Bankruptcy Judge Redfield T. Baum. On June 15, 2009, Judge Baum denied the Coyotes' motion on relocation without prejudice, which means the decision is subject to further consideration by the court if resubmitted.
