The incentives apply to the player option only.
It’s such a great relief to see that this is all over. Now both sides can move forward.
It will be interesting to see though if the Red Sox still decide to pursue a trade for either Miguel Montero or Jarrod Saltalamacchia as they really don’t have a catcher of the future right now.

THE CAPTAIN IS STAYING!!!! Jason Varitek realized that if he can't get $10 million a year, he might as well stay for a potential World Series contender where he has played his whole big league career, is worshipped as a hero by the fans, is the captain in the clubhouse and won't have to learn a whole new pitching staff... and still earn millions of dollars a year in the worst economy since the Depression. Salty still a Ranger, for now
Uwe Blog —
... All winter we've heard rumblings that the Boston Red Sox coveted Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia like a dog does sleep. Well, any thought of Salty or any other Rangers catcher going north is unlikely. The BoSox announced they re-signed catcher Jason Varitek to a one-year deal with a team option for 2010. 'Tek will make $5 million. Also, the Sox signed Daniel Bard a month or so ago. So it's very doubtful they'll still want to deal for a catcher ... for now. Come midseason, talks could continue as Varitek will probably struggle and the Red ...

The Captain is Back -- Whiff!
Drunken Bleachers Blog —
Alas! The drama is over. Jason Varitek will be with the Red Sox in 2009. It's easy to get sentimental about this. I am. I can't help it. Tek will likely retire a Red Sox and I'd bet my left big toe that his number "33" will never be worn by another Red Sox player. But -- and that's a big but -- it won't be fun to watch another season of our aging, rally-killing, .220 hitting catcher (.175 with RISP) at the plate. Yikes. Let's hope that this deal will put the Red Sox in a better position to trade for a young catcher. Remember this?

The talk all around baseball is that the Red Sox will still pursue a trade for either Miguel Montero of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Jarrod Saltalamacchia of Texas Rangers or Taylor Teagarden, also of the Rangers.
There are conflicting reports though.
