Guess who has the best offense in football?
Published 10/9/2007 by Deshawn Zombie at 18 to 88
Yeah, you got it. The Horse rolls on in this week's Footballoutsiders.com DVOA ratings. The Colts sit at #2 over all, and #1 in offense (10 on D). Again, it's amazing to me that there even exists a Manning/Brady debate. Brady has had unquestionably the five greatest games of his career right? He has been on fire for five weeks. And guess what? He still can't pass Manning in DPAR and Manning is still running a more efficient offense. And this is a normal season for #18. One guys absolute insane, Randy Moss induced best is not as good as another guys typical season. Hmmmm. ...

... . But the Patriots have been other-worldly. The advanced stats at Football Outsiders rank the Patriots as the second-best team of the last decade through the first five games of the season, second only to those ridiculous out-of-nowhere 1999 Rams. ...

... 8 is their current ranking, up from 13 which is really on the bubble for playoffs. A more reliable metric at Football Outsiders does us even better, at seventh. We have the 16th highest offensive DVOA but are 4th on defense. It has not escaped my attention that our ...
Football Outsiders Rankings

Football Outsiders has released their DVOA rankings for week 5. I don't know how much stock I put in calculations like these but hey we're in a bye week so what else do we have to do. They explain their DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) ranking as a system that breaks down ever single play and compares a team's performance to the league average based on situation in order to determine value over average. You can look on thier website and read about how they calculate these numbers because it's too complex to try and explain on here. ...
Why John York Can’t Afford To Keep Mike Nolan
Published 10/11/2007 by Erik Larson at 49ers
If I’m reading the 49er Faithful accurately, John York will have to fire Mike Nolan at the end of the year. If I’m interpreting correctly the boos in the stadium, the conversations in the parking lot and the comments on the blogs and talk radio, John York won’t have much of a choice. Nolan will have to go. But it’s not for the reasons you might think. It’s not because in a league where teams regularly go from worst-to-first in one year, and in the NFL’s weakest division, the 49ers have gone from worst, to almost worst, to just mediocre, to what’s looking like very mediocre again this year. That would be a good reason, but that’s not why York will fire Nolan. It’s not because by more objective statistical measures, the 49ers are even worse than their record has shown. Football Outsiders has a formula that analyzes every play in every game in the NFL to rank each team, adjusting for opponent. The 4 ...
