Words cannot express how excited I am for the upcoming IU basketball season.
Actually, I take that back. Certain words can express my excitement, such as the ones written by Dana O’Neil (thanks @ryancorazza) a few days back at ESPN.com.
Since I don’t have much time today for writing, I will give you an excerpt, a link to her story, and then some other intriguing Friday afternoon links.
I love the NFL and the MLB playoffs, but I will always be a college basketball fan at heart. I’m ready for Year Two of the Tom Crean Era (i.e. The Purge Kelvin Sampson From the Memories of All IU Fans Era) and it cannot get here soon ...
Simmons on Spurs, Duncan
San Antonio Spurs Dynasty —
ESPN's Bill Simmons has published his annual NBA Preview. In typical Simmons fashion, it is a list of the 33 most intriguing figures for the upcoming season. Two Spurs make appearances on the list. #33 is Manu Ginobili, saying what we've all been saying for months: without a healthy Manu, nothing else really matters. #2 is Tim Duncan, and I encourage you to read the whole thing. At the end of the Duncan section, he writes this: I am a Spurs junkie. I love reading about them. I love the way they put their rosters together and value chemistry so deeply. I love the way they interact during games (as I've written many times). I just get a kick out of ...

A very insightful look at the state of statistical analysis.
Bobcats beat writer Rick Bonnell isn’t surprised by Emeka Okafor’s reluctance to return to the court after receiving medical clearance from the Hornets training staff, noting that Okafor has a “odd preoccupation with being perfectly healthy before again stepping on a court.”
Byron Scott says there’s a passion problem in New Orleans.
I’m a few days late to this, but did you notice Doc Rivers has followed Mike D’Antoni’s lead in abolishing early morning shootarounds? ...
Simmons has Blazer Fans Burning…But Why?
Rip City Project | A Portland Trailblazers blog —
There is nothing like being away from technology for a couple hours and watching from afar as things starts brewing. That’s what happened today when I was blindsided by this “uproar” surrounding Bill Simmons’ annual NBA preview . My UberTwitter was going nutty. I was tempted to just ignore this and take it for what it is. An entertaining columnist making a bold prediction in a pre-season article. I’ve done this before, I mean a few years back I swore up and down the Bobcats would make the playoffs for unknown reasons. Sometimes you just go with an angle. Of course Blazer Nation had…strong reactions when they saw Simmons’ comments. But he had some valid points, especially ...
Possibly crazy ESPN writer chooses Rudy (!)
Bust a Bucket - A Portland Trail Blazers Blog —
Scoop Jackson is never wrong and only writes very smart things. In order to to believe me don't read this. Or anything else Scoop has written.
Anyways, the important thing is that Scoop Jackson is incredibly down with Rudy (!) Fernandez. In fact, he believes that Rudy (!) will win the Sixth Man of the Year Award. David Thorpe is also in, picking Fernandez to take home Most Improved honors.
With such a stacked roster I'm not sure there will be enough opportunities for Fernandez to get the kinds of stats necessary to win awards. I do appreciate that he seems to be in these discussions somewhat. If anything these grand predictions by the national ...

... were too young. Batshit crazy Stephen Jackson was batshit crazy Stephen Jackson. Really the only guys who were in their primes were Duncan and Rose.
Still, on paper they were damn good, and no matter how messy they made it look, they did win it all at the end, and that's what it's all about, right? Even if they only managed to put it all together for a quarter here and six minutes there, they had those moments of brilliance that was enough to carry them through.
While I thoroughly enjoyed Simmons' NBA preview (take a guess why), I think he's being a bit of ...

Right as they were hanging up, Brown casually mentioned to this friend, 'Hey, if you talk to Michael, can you tell him that I'm trying to get ahold of him?" And normally, this wouldn't be weird." Stop looking so surprised. The Clippers define fail. I couldn't help but spit up a little when I read this part of Bill Simmons' 2009-10 NBA preview: The Clippers are going to be good. The parts fit. They have size, shooting and rebounding. They can play fast or slow. Their best player (Baron Davis) is motivated again. They have the Gordon/Griffin combo, only the NBA's best young inside/outside combo. They have a bench. They have cap flexibility (only $36 million committed next season). This is a playoff team. I'm telling you. And as I've written many times, Clipperland remains the most ...
