What to Make of Steven Pearce
By Alex Eisenberg...Steven Pearce started his professional career much later than most top prospects. He was drafted out of college at age 22 and was moved slowly up the Pirates organizational ladder. At each level, Pearce has put up excellent numbers and finally in 2007, after dominating three levels of competition, Pearce was promoted to the big league level. [link]

It is true that PNC park is just about the hardest park in the majors for a RHB to homer, but Victory Field in Indy and Blair Co Ballpark in Altoona have similar dimensions, and Lynchburg is also a tough HR park.

I ran MLEs for the Pirates, matching Indianapolis with Pittsburgh, Altoona with Pittsburgh, etc for players who had played both places since PNC opened.

    Pearce's 2007 (at 4 levels) translates as 309/365/562 78w/150k, while his career minor & major (including 2008) is 280/341/530 76w/180k

His breakout 2007 looks very similar to the past few years of Aramis Ramirez, while his career numbers look quite a bit like Adam LaRoche.

For fielding, Dan Fox's SFR had Pearce at +5.9 runs at 1b in 2007, 2nd best among minor 1b to Daric Barton.

Worst case, the Pearce is likely a RH Adam LaRoche.

Could MLB Eventually Ban Maple Bats?

Ever since Barry Bonds started using them in 2001, the use of maple bats has been in the rise. Now, a baseball culture icon, Sam Holzman, of Sam Bats, gave Bonds one of the pricey maple bats which run from $65-$75 each, and when he did, it created a wave of players using them. Albert Pujols and Alfonso Soriano are but two others that use maple bats. But, while players say that they can hit ...

A Public Service Annoucement

Since I’m seeing this thrown around a lot, no we can’t send Andruw Jones back to AAA even though he never used up his option years. Once a player has more than three years of service time, he can refuse any assignment.    ...
