Whatever Happened to QuesTec?
Whatever Happened to QuesTec?
After a flurry of initial controversies, the QuesTec outrage seemingly disappeared overnight. What happened to the system?

Let me preface this by saying that I am an NCAA baseball umpire. I think the QuesTec experiment in the end was a good educational tool for the Major League Umpires and proved that they were doing their job correctly. I remember seeing some stat a few years back were analysts went back through every MLB game and found that MLB umpires had an accuarcy rate of 98%, pretty amazing to be that precise with judgment calls at full speed. Anyways ESPN now has their K-Zone which calls out umpire mistakes on a nightly basis, which I think is much worse then QuesTec ever was.

You make a good point. But nobody has said a word (publicly, anyway) about K-Zone. As a viewer, I really like it. If I was an umpire, I'm not so sure I would.

The K-Zone, I'm not too sure about. It looks to me like the producers manipulate the icons to make some obvious balls look like strikes and vice versa. Anyone else notice that?

I haven't noticed that, but I do wonder how they decide at what point to put up the icon telling us where the ball crosses the plate.
