LoHud: Abraham: When all the stars come out, Mariano Rivera deserves honorary start But, but...can Mariano handle the pressure of NOT having a lead? (toy pinstriped Datsun bullpen car whizzes by) Here’s an idea that would make the game even more special: Name Mariano Rivera the starting pitcher for the American League. Yes, we know, Rivera is a closer. But he also has been the best pitcher in the American League for more than a decade now. Here is an opportunity for his greatness to be recognized at his home ballpark in front of a worldwide audience. ...But this goes beyond ...
Mariano Rivera: All-Star Game Starter?

Peter Abraham pitches the idea of Mo starting the All-Star game, in an open letter to Terry Francona. I'd be surprised if it happens, but it's an intriguing idea. There's a good part of me that would like to see Mariano in his element: closing out a close victory for the American League. Judging by the past 20 years or so, the odds would seem to be in the American League's favor, as the team has gone 16-3-1 in the last 20 All-Star games and 10-0-1 in the last 11. But, what if that doesn't happen? Surely, Francona will get Mariano into the game for an out or, more likely, for ...

Yankee writer: Rivera should start the All-Star Game

Peter Abraham, a well-respected Yankees scribe, posted this howler on his Lohud blog last night: An open letter to Red Sox’ manager Terry Francona, suggesting the manager of the World Series champions should choose Yankees’ closer Mariano Rivera as the starting pitcher in next Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. No, you are not hallucinating; and yes, Mr. Abraham appears to be sincere. If you needed any additional evidence that the Red Sox own the Yankees’ soul, well, here it is: A Yankees beat writer pleading with the Red Sox to extend an olive branch to the Yankees ...

... that should count for something. But in the National League, maybe another one-loss pitchers should have earned himself a starting nod. San Francisco stud Tim Lincecum is 10-1 with a 2.49 ERA and leads the league in strikeouts with 122. He's the best pitcher in baseball and his team is just 26-43 on days he doesn't pitch. Lincecum may be young but he's earned more than just a roster spot; he should be starting this game.
And yes, I am a total Yankees homer who wants to see Mariano Rivera start the game. Sue me.

Those who read this site with any regularity know that I hate two things: sportswriters, and people from New York. So when I read Peter Abraham's column arguing for Mariano Rivera to start the All-Star Game, you can imagine my rage. ...
