Good insight into who's putting the work in at the back in the premiership. This season the "stars" haven't really performed in the Premier League or the England squad. It's the mid and lower level clubs where the real star performers have begun to shine. [link]

I thought I had an assist coming my way when Stevie Gerrard hit a shot which Paul Robinson fumbled, allowing Andriy Voronin (the finest Ukrainian in the Premier League by some distance) to score the rebound. Alas, here s SquadGod s defnition, via OPTA (the fine football statistics service they use): An assist is a final pass to a team-mate, who goes on to score a goal. So it has to be a straightforward pass, from which the teammate scores. This rules out winning penalties, winning free-kicks from which someone scores, forcing own goals etc. While this robs me of some points I thought I was due, at least it clears up any future confusion. Either your guy passes to a teammate who scores, or you get nothing. The second thing SquadBlog posted this week was a Value for Money index.
