Who is Jeff Finger and why are we paying him $14M? - Toronto Maple Leafs Blog Links2
I'll admit it. The Leafs just signed a free agent to a pretty substantial contract, and I have no idea who he is. So I asked somebody who would: the fine folks over at the excellent Avs blog In The Cheap Seats . Here's their scouting report: Jeff Finger seemed like he was going to be a career AHL guy until an injury to the Avs earned Finger a call-up late in the 2006-2007 season. He played ... [link]

Puck Daddy's hastily graded free-agent frenzy report card
Published 7/2/2008 by Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy
... Another strange day in TB: Adam Hall is a decent role player, Olaf Kolzig is barely a starting goaltender in the NHL anymore (based on his last season in Washington) and Vrbata could be overpaid after a career year in a walk-season. GRADE: C+ Toronto Maple Leafs: Not even the return of Curtis Joseph is going to save the Leafs from scorn and ridicule over the Jeff Finger UFA signing. Even if it's not as bad as it first seemed. GRADE: D ...

I can’t understand why they have struggled…
Published 7/3/2008 by David Driscoll-Carignan at In The Cheap Seats
... Jeff Finger is a lot of things. “Shutdown defensemen” is not one of them. I find it amusing that Cliff Fletcher takes fans to task for not having seen Finger, but then seems to imply that he hasn’t seen him either. Instead, he’s relying on the word of a currently-unemployed coach. It’s okay, Cliff. As long as Joel Quenneville says he’s one of the top 5 defensemen, you’ll be fine. If there’s anything Quenneville showed us in Colorado, it’s that he’s a suberb judge of talent. I’m sure the fact that he benched Finger ...

Did the Leafs Confuse Sauer with Finger or am I Missing Something Here?

There were many signings that made me shake my head yesterday. There’s one in particular that really confused me and many others. Jeff Finger. FOURTEEN MILLION DOLLARS. I decided to hold off on commenting until I heard the team’s ...

Saying bye to Jeff Finger
From Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The point is, the Jeff Finger I saw is a nice fifth or sixth D-man. Not a No. 1, 2 or 3, as the Leafs seem to think he is. And certainly not worth that kind of money. I mean, Jeff Finger is now making more than Adam Foote, people. Think about that for a second. The Jeff Finger I saw looked out of gas at the end of his shift too many times, to the point ...
Jeff Finger Signs In Toronto
Finger snagged a four-year deal worth 3.5-million a season. The Leafs overpaid here and while it will be tough to see Finger go, Giguere made the right move by not paying him all that money on the basis of one season.
Free Agent Thoughts
Here are some of my thoughts on the free agent signings so far. 1. I want to give the finger tor all those who are outraged at the Jeff Finger signing and who have seen him play fewer than two games. Yes, that is pretty much everyone. As a Leaf fan I am [...]
Doc...you've pulled the wrong tooth
Like me, many people were baffled when Jeff Finger was awarded a hefty raise by the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Kurt Sauer signed with the Coyotes for the very reasonable sum of $1.75M/year. Mainly because Sauer is the better defenseman. Dan Tolensky noticed as well. And he's come up with a rather interesting interesting thesis : maybe Fletcher mistook Finger for Sauer? "A lot of people in ...
Freddy got Fingered or at least the Leafs salary structure did: Leafs sign Jeff Finger
The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to amaze me. Just when I think that it’s safe to trust their manoeuvres they go out and sign Jeff Finger for 4 years and 14 million quid. Who’s Jeff Finger? He must of been an honourable mention in the Norris Trophy nominations this year. This signing is dubious to say the least and Jeff Finger better prove to be the second coming of ...
Fletcher Gets Fingered
Somebody pull my finger. The Leafs' signings on the first day of free agency are a joke. Jeff Finger, 4 years at $3.5 million per? Are you kidding me? Niklas Hagman, 4 years for $12 million? Can you say Jason Blake? When I first saw the deal for Finger, I thought the Leafs had signed the unknown defenceman for $3.5 million total. I'll admit, I know nothing about this guy. I have never even ...
Leafs Give Their Fans The Finger
by Jes So, I'm on vacation here, checking out the Internets for a few mins whilst sipping a bitter Americano ... mmmm ... This one signing really caught my eye The Toronto Maple Leafs jumped into the free agent market on Tuesday, signing defenceman Jeff Finger to a four-year deal worth $3.5 million a season Jeff Finger for $3.5mil a season??!?! A guy with less than 100 games NHL experience ...
Leafs without a plan
From Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Hell in a handbasket. There's no other way to describe it. When a young man named Jeff Finger (Who?) plays one full season in the NHL, including being a healthy scratch for five of his team's 10 playoff games, and is rewarded with a contract that pays him a mind-blowing $3.75 million (all figures U.S.) per season – a 733 per cent raise in salary – ...
Leafs give their fans the Finger
Ok, yeah, right. The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Jeff Finger to a four-year deal worth $3.5 million per season. Jeff Finger is a 28 year old, second year player, coming off a 79 game season in Colorado. He has totaled a robust 29 points in 94 games before being highly coveted (apparently just by the Leafs). Someone please tell me what makes the Leafs do such a thing? Not that ...
Best/worst
TSN's best and worst moves of the day: Mike Milbury: Best is the stillpending extension for Evgeni Malkin. Worst is Cristobal Huet in Chicago. Darren Pang : Best is Ty Conklin to Detroit. Worst is Leafs signing Jeff Finger for four years, $14 million Pierre McGuire: Best is Edmonton's trade for Erik Cole. Worst is Finger, "28 years old, 94 games in the NHL."  ...
Maple Leafs sign Jeff Finger.
Most hockey fans outside of Colorado have little idea who Jeff Finger is, but many in Canada will get to know him starting next season. Finger today signed a four-year, $3.5 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who only play in Canada’s biggest hockey market. Despite the efforts of Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher to clear some cap space to continue the team’s rebuilding plan he ...

Jeff Finger signs 4 year deal with Leafs
From TSN: Toronto signs UFA defenceman Jeff Finger to a 4 year deal worth $3.5-million a season. Read the news from TSN here . For Leafs Nation's sake, I am hoping this report is a joke. Finger could hardly crack the Avs' top-six last season and now they decided to give him a $3.5 million per year deal.
Sometimes, less is more
Jeff Finger. $3.5 million. These two things should never go together...* But on this day, just about anything could happen. Sharks fans might be disappointed that they missed out on Brian Campbell (ridiculous $7.1 million price tag) and Wade Redden (being paid $6.5 million until he's 37 years old by the always stupid New York Rangers), but honestly, the money that's flying around has ...
The Wild Aren't Done Yet
Well, let's just say that Wild fans hope the Wild aren't done yet. Free agency started Tuesday, and as usual, it's anything but free. The insane money being thrown around makes you wonder how the league's personnel people got their jobs ($3.75 million a season for Jeff Finger? Really?). In Minnesota, the Wild have developed a reputation for fiscal conservatism. There's nothing really wrong ...
Something Is Going On, But I Can’t Put my Finger on it
The day starting out normal enough, aside from the Leafs signing Curtis Joseph (read about it below), but as the day went on things got stranger and stranger. It really wouldn’t have been much of a risk for the ...
