First off, excellent Black Swan reference.
Second off, never be ashamed to be using qualitative methods when it comes to initial exploration of a topic. There's not a lot out there on other types of risk (other than injuries), but there's always Steve Blass/Chuck Knobluauch disease (a severe anxiety reaction). Qualitative work is where all of this starts. The problem, of course, is that we don't have access to the kind of data that would allow us to test the hypotheses.
