Why wasn't Jay Bruce called up sooner? Links8
The Reds have announced that they are calling up Jay Bruce. Bruce is currently hitting .364/.393/.630 through 49 games in triple-A with ten homers, nine doubles, five triples, and eight steals. Sure, his K/BB ratio is a miserable 45/12 but even so: why hasn’t he been in the majors sooner? It certainly isn’t the fact that there is no room in the Reds’s outfield. ... [link]

Beyond the Box Score: Bendix: Why wasn’t Jay Bruce called up sooner?
Published 5/27/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
Beyond the Box Score: Bendix: Why wasn’t Jay Bruce called up sooner? I’m familiar with Gary Lewis and the Playboys doing Super Six ...but Jay Bruce and the Reds doing Super Two, not so much. This can only be answered on a case-by-case basis, but I argue in most cases – especially with top prospects – it is in the team’s best interest to avoid super two status. While arbitration still favors the team because it is only a one-year commitment and often pays the player less than he would receive on the open market, arbitration can still be very expensive for a team. For ...

Bringing up Jay Bruce by Dave Studeman May 27, 2008 Beyond the Boxscore reviews the Reds' reasons for delaying Jay Bruce's major league debut . There's another way to look at this, however: Bruce is getting gypped out of millions of dollars. There's a basic employee fairness issue here, and it's hard to see how depriving a player of money he's earned the right to make is fair. The ...

... Pirates. The 21-year-old outfielder, chock full of power and speed, was leading the International League in hitting, with a.364 average with 10 bombs, 37 RBIs and eight stolen bags. Bruce was recalled from the AAA Louisville Bats yesterday and inserted directly into the starting lineup. Finally. He became the first Reds player to enjoy a three-hit debut since Willie Green in 1992. Way to make an impression. [FOX Sports] | [Beyond the Box Score] | [Diamond Hoggers]

Dusty likes them young

... He definitely wasn't shy in giving Votto, Volquez, and Cueto prominent roles at the beginning of the season, once they showed that they earned it. The holdup for Bruce had nothing to do with Baker, and as soon as he was called up, Dusty put him directly into the 2-spot, which definitely does not show a lack of confidence in the kid. ...
