Wild times for sports blogs may be nearing an end Links22
A rumor found its way onto the Internet recently. It involved a high-profile athlete. It was scandalous. And entirely unconfirmed. As skeptics might say, it was perfect for the Wild West territory of sports blogs. But an interesting thing happened to that bit of gossip about Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Blogs such as Deadspin and the Big Lead treated it with relative caution, while others ignored ... [link]

Brog: Thank Goodness For My Trip To The Urinal

I’d heard from LAT moles that the sports dept. was preparing an upcoming piece on sports blogs for publish, but didn’t know it was out until I visited the trusty, upstairs urinal at Red Rock today in WeHo: Los Angeles Times SbB Piece David Wharton penned the piece , which reports that sports bloggers are now being more responsible in their posting approach. Truth is, we’ve been that way for as long as I can remember. We’ve a huge audience going back to 2003, and if we posted anything defamatory, we’d have had our a$$ sued off by now. Nothing’s changed here. ...

From David Wharton of the Los Angeles Times :“We’re trying to make money on this,” said A.J. Daulerio, a senior writer for Deadspin. “Without going completely porn, the best way to do that is to add a more journalistic element.” Which can mean taking fewer chances.“It’s the difference between living in a dorm room you can trash and buying your own home,” said Niles, a former editor of USC’s discontinued Online Journalism Review. “You say, ‘I want to live here a while, so I have to treat this with respect.’ ” There is an element of irony, blogs adopting journalistic ...

An Appropriate Response to David Wharton

An Appropriate Response to David Wharton I just read David Wharton's piece on the end of the "wild times" in the world of sports blogging , and while I'm sure I could vent a couple of thousands of words over what I think about it, I'll just hand it over to Weezer: I started blogging for nobody but myself. I don't see any reason to change now. Trackback Pings TrackBack URL for this entry: http://www.ericmcerlain.com/mt/mt-tb.cgi/8379 Comments Post a comment

Okay, to catch you up. LA Times does story on blogging, featuring The Big Lead's Jason McIntyre. The Big Lead clarifies and stands by its/his position. Deadspin opens fire on the article and, though respectfully, McIntyre. Some of these we let go by. There are a number of pitches that we don't swing at. Because really, who cares what we think? But this one we'll weigh in on, because we feel like it. In the article, Jason/The Big (?) mentions a "sketchy middle ground" that blogs are being pulled towards. ...

... A curious thing happened to my RSS reader in the past couple of days: there was this article in the L.A. Times on Sunday that basically was the same old “us v. them” narrative about the mainstream media and sports blogging, and it made me yawn, because it was stoking the fires of the whole Buzz Bissinger vs. Will Leitch mess from Costas Now awhile back and I simply found it boring and innocuous enough. This is probably because I have very little professional investment in any “movement.” ...

That doesn't change the fact that his "argument" was incoherent and, for a writer we've always respected, shockingly wrong-headed.
