The start of the new year, that means the Maineiacs will go to their black jerseys at home. Their first opponent will be the Gatineau Olympiques. They come to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for their only visit tonight at 7pm. ESPN Radio (870 and 1470am) will start their coverage at 6:45pm. The Olympiques will be without Claude Giroux who’s at the World Junior Championships... [link]

The hits just keep on coming for the NHL and the Winter Classic. The ratings are in, and the Penguins/Sabres outing at Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year’s Day got a 2.6 overnight rating and a 5 share for NBC.

Something momentous and stupendous happened to hockey on Tuesday. By late Wednesday afternoon I was aware of an unusual mainstream media preoccupation forming a phenomenon: they were, rather uniformly, rather nationally, saying nice things about our sport. Really nice things. Then came Wednesday’s 5:00 hour on ESPN.
