Chicago Sun-Times: GM Williams splits after strange comment Not as strange as the time Professor LaSerne taught Superman how to mentally split in two! But it’s damn close! Ken Williams was among the first wave of general managers to escape the confusing maze of lobbies at the Opryland Resort today, choosing to cancel his daily briefing with reporters. Probably a good call considering the White Sox’ GM made perhaps the most ridiculous comment to come out of the annual convention. Reacting Wednesday to the blockbuster deal that sent power-hitting third baseman Miguel Cabrera ...

Winter Meetings Aftermath

... are going to try to blow away any other offer that could be made, at least financially. Dave van Dyck says that Hendry has a backup plan, but doesn't say what it is. So? I'm talking about this guy. He was released by the Cardinals. Yes, he's almost 38 years old. Still, he hit .290/.350/.368 as a spare-part outfielder last year. Is he worth signing, if for no other reason than to have a Japanese-speaking teammate for Fukudome? Finally, the wacky statement of the day was made by -- who else, White Sox GM Kenny Williams: ...

... suggests it’s the Phils, White Sox and Rangers in the hunt for Rowand and that Texas will not give Rowand five years, $75 million. This article suggests the White Sox would be better off trying to add Juan Pierre than Rowand. I’d really like that to be true so I’m trying hard to see that one, but it’s just not happening. This ...

Would Anyone Take Juan Pierre?
Published 12/7/2007 by McFleece at MLB Fleece Factor
Well, the Chicago White Sox might be interested, according to the Chicago Sun Times. Pierre, 30, somehow managed to fleece the LA Dodgers into a 5 year, $44M deal last winter (Aaron Rowand should send him a Thank You note, by the way).  Now, with Andruw Jones on board, LA would surely entertain offers for the speedy, yet offensively offensive Pierre. The Sun Times notes White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen’s connection to Pierre, saying that Guillen “adores” Pierre.  (They both spent time together in Florida.)  Whether Guillen can convince GM ...

Ken Williams Is A Comedian
Published 12/7/2007 by Vegas Watch at Vegas Watch
This is brilliant (via FanHouse and BBTF): "Reacting Wednesday to the blockbuster deal that sent power-hitting third baseman Miguel Cabrera and former All-Star left-hander Dontrelle Willis from the Florida Marlins to the Detroit Tigers — wrecking the Sox’ latest offseason plans — [Chicago White Sox GM Ken] Williams said: 'All this has done is put the Tigers in a better position to contend with us.'"I suppose he is right, in some sense. But his word choice is quite poor; I would have used "destroy", "pummel", or "embarrass", rather than ...

Rangers Like Patterson, Ethier, Hamilton, Fukudome
Published 12/8/2007 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... Andre Ethier, 26 in April, is expendable now that the Dodgers have four outfielders.  His career line of .295/.357/.464 is solid, though that is average for an AL right fielder.  The Dodgers may opt to move Juan Pierre instead, if they can find a taker. ...
