N.Y. Daily News: Willie Randolph opens up after his recent firing as Mets manager

N.Y. Daily News: Willie Randolph opens up after his recent firing as Mets manager I thought I’d at least get to the next Yankee series, or the All-Star break maybe. Heck, just Sunday night, before we left to fly to California, Omar and I had a heart-to-heart near the trainer’s room. I said to him, “Listen, I know you are under a lot of pressure, that there’s stuff going on. If you feel you want to do this now, go ahead and do it. “But don’t make me get on the plane if I’m not the guy you want.” OMAR GRABBED my hand and told me not to think like that; things were still ...

... MY TURN: Willie Randolph writes -- or had someone ghost-write -- his take on his firing by the Mets for the Daily News. "I won't lie to you," he says. "I don't like the way the Mets handled my firing. I think it was pretty weak. I think I would've deserved better if my record had been 0-555, not 302-253." Still, he absolves Omar Minaya of any malicious intent. And in one of the more amusing sidenotes, he cites Brian McNamee -- and not Bill Belichick -- as the source of the saying "it is what it is." ...

... had something to do with how I was judged, I did nothing but sow the seeds of my demise. I kick myself about that every day. It makes me angry - and really sad. Now the Mets Police were all in favor of a change at manager, and always felt Willie whined his way into the job in the first place. However, this was handled so so so so poorly. All the Mets had to do was fire him on Memorial Day. Now everyone feels bad for this guy. Even The Mets Police. ...

... So now the Willie Randolph employment termination with the New York Mets has reached the “Shut the fuck up” stage with Randolph writing a woe is me a piece in today’s NY Daily News. The more Randolph goes on about getting fired the more I think Tony Bernazard was on to something. Yes, Omar Minaya should have fired Willie on Sunday or even sooner than that and I don’t care what some folks say, there is a right way and a wrong way to do fire someone and flying a guy 3,000 miles then firing him is the wrong way and proves that maybe Omar Minaya is lacking the “SKILL SETS” to ...

Huh? Was this REALLY necessary? And if Randolph did not see it coming, he needs to sharpen up his self awareness. A lot. Oh Joe Blanton... There were people who actually wanted you for Lastings Milledge. His ERA+ of 80 can stay where it is while the Mets have found Figuerora who posted an 79 ERA+, Mike Pelfrey who posted an 88 ERA+, and Claudio Vargas who posted an 105 ERA+. The lesson to learn here is you do not trade for mediocritity. Yes, he can give you innings, but I would rather keep my depth or use the depth for something better than in a ...

... CHILLS WITHOUT THE THRILLS—Not only does the public opinion fallout from the Willie Randolph coast-to-coast canning continue, but Randolph himself has weighed in with a byline in the New York Daily News. It only began with Randolph writing, “You’ve heard of Black Friday? This was my Black Tuesday,” and it only continued with Randolph being handed an envelope containing a copy of his contract “that basically says I better not say anything detrimental about the team, or I might jeopardize the rest of the money ...

... , and while I can't fault the Daily News for jumping at the exclusive, there's also Randolph's own maudlin account). I never bought into some of the more heated criticisms of Randolph, but I accepted the fact that the time came when he simply had to go, as unpleasant as the process of dumping a manager mid-season is. Yet somehow, the same media that spent the past year and a half burning effigies of Randolph now wants to make the man out to be some sort of innocent victim of a dire conspiracy. The truth is a lot less dramatic, in all directions. ...
