Speed Read: Mets Up To Same Old September Trix
Published 9/29/2008 by Matt Sussman at SPORTSbyBROOKS
In a way, the Trix Rabbit is very much a metaphor for the American Dream. Every red-blooded American wants that shiny pot of gold, or cereal. And the Trix Rabbit, God bless him, never gets it. Much like the New York Mets, who wanted those tickets to the postseason so badly last year, but never got it. And this year, plus Johan Santana, the same fate has been bestowed on Those Ovarachievin(?) Amazins. (Bright Side: Mets owner launches comedy career on heels of team’s collapse) One man who seems to be eating plenty of cereal, CC Sabathia, was mostly the reason ...

Wilpon takes positives from the season that was..........

Despite all the expectations, the what-ifs and the could-have-beens, Mets CEO Jeff Wilpon managed to muster a few positives Sunday on the final day of his team's 2008 season. "I think we overachieved based on what we had," Wilpon said. Dressed in a windbreaker and sneakers with electric yellow streaks, Wilpon lamented all the injuries -- to John Maine, Billy Wagner and Moises Alou. He ran down the list of replacement players who had populated Shea Stadium -- Daniel Murphy, Luis Ayala, Nick Evans and Brian Stokes. And Wilpon smiled, best as he could. "I think we underachieved last year, and I think we overachieved this year," Wilpon said. "Look who our second baseman was. Look who ...

Quote: Mets are Overachievers

According to MLB.com, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon told reporters, “I think we overachieved,” considering where it was earlier in the year, and considering all of the injuries they had to deal with. …you have got to be kidding me… …i mean, whatever had been the case, be it injuries, fourth place in june, etc., the facts are this: a) his team was three games in first place in September, b) they were two games up in the Wild Card, and c) they controlled their own fate up until the last 30 minutes of the season… …so, while i understand what he’s ...

Never Accuse Fred Wilpon Of Seeing The Glass As Half Empty
Published 9/30/2008 by Sully (info@sullybaseball.com) at SULLY BASEBALL
So Mets owner Fred Wilpon thinks the Mets overachieved this season. A year after narrowly missing the playoffs and then adding the best pitcher in baseball, the team imploded in September again and that's overachieving. But no doubt they fired Willie Randolph because they were under achieving. Hmmm. Well let's split the difference and say the Mets achieved. Wilpon explained his statement by saying ""Look who our second baseman was. Look who our left fielder was. Look who was in our bullpen. " So you are saying ...
