Two Different Roads - One Goal In Mind

from TSN, After six weeks of marathon hockey, the stage is finally set for a Stanley Cup Final between the game’s marquee player and the game’s marquee franchise. At one end of the ice, it’s arguably the NHL’s best-run club in the Detroit Red Wings. At the other end, it’s a young and fiery Pittsburgh Penguins club led by Sidney Crosby.
And though both teams share the moniker as the NHL’s cream of the crop, their paths to glory have been very different.
In Pittsburgh, the Penguins were slowly and painstakingly built up from scratch.

Pulling this from a comment from this morning...a good story from TSN about how Detroit and Pittsburgh built their rosters. It illustrates the value of a strong organization and it's definitely something Dean Lombardi and Luc Robitaille would like you to read and buy into, because it goes along with their philosophy.

... is nothing more than a name with expectations attached, while Sid the Kid is leading the Penguins out of exile and into the Stanley Cup Finals. The point I'm trying to make here is that the NHL Entry Draft matters a whole lot more than most people think. Yes, free agency is huge in today's game, but development from within is the only way the Sabres will ever win a Stanley Cup, plain and simple. Take a look at the two teams in the Finals this year and tell me the draft isn't important to their success . Yes, players like Sykora (Pens) and Rafalski (Wings) were brought in ...
