Tonight is the first night of game for Arizona Fall League. Seven Yankees have made the trip to Arizona and will be playing for the Peoria Javelinas. Those seven Yanks are Phil Hughes, OF Austin Jackson, RHP Jeff Marquez, 1B Juan Miranda, INF Kevin Russo, RHP Humberto Sanchez, and RHP Kevin Whelan. For a breakdown on each player go check out Chad Jennings' blog here. Phil Hughes will start the opener tonight against the Surprise Rafters, and you can follow the game here. As long as there are Yankees playing I will be posting Hawaii Winter Ball, AFL, and Caribbean Ball updates all ...

The other, which is perhaps tougher to evaluate, is Tex's -- warranted or not -- A-Rod-ish reputation as someone who, according to Sherman, "feasts on bad pitching, does his best work when his team is way ahead or behind, and is a corporation unto himself who does not mesh seamlessly with the clubhouse culture." In other news... Mariano's surgery today was deemed a success . He will begin throwing activities in three months. The Arizona Fall League schedule gets underway today. Mets looking good in AFL debut

Last night was the season opener for the Arizona Fall league, four of the five Mets assigned to the league played and all had good nights. Phil Hughes, Austin Jackson dominate in AFL
Published 10/8/2008 by admin at yankeesdaily.com
Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson star Phil Hughes dominated as he helped the Peoria Javelinas top the Surprise Rafters 10-3 in the Arizona Fall League. He pitched 5 scoreless innings giving up 1 hit while striking out 7 for the win. Austin Jackson went 2 for 4, tripled and drove in four runs. It looks like Austin Jackson might be playing in the Bronx next year if he keeps playing the way he has been playing since the end of the minor league season and the start of the Arizona Fall League. It seems like he is toying with the minor league players. This is what I like to see from Phil Hughes. I like the way he is pitching. If he keeps pitching ...

The Indians’ prospects will be suiting up for the Surprise Rafters - and yes, that is the real team name.  The guys that have the honor of playing for the rafters: Stephen Head, 1B Beau Mills, 1B Josh Rodriguez, 2B/SS Wes Hodges, 3B Chuck Lofgren, LHP Tony Sipp, LHP Erik Stiller, RHP Neil ...

I want you all to know that I’m thrilled to have AZ back in the saddle again. He’s been knocking it out of the park the last couple of days, the Arizona Fall League started yesterday and the Caribbean winter leagues will be starting very soon. I feel like we are getting our mojo back. The DFR, oh, how have I missed thee. I’m still not sure if I’m going to do a daily report or some sort of weekly update on the winter leagues, we’ll just have to play it by ear, depending on how much action there is to report. First and foremost, goodbye Mr. Kissell. He will certainly be missed but his ...

Move over Jess Todd, Adam Reifer is the one who will destroy us all. “Basically every player I play, I grow a hatred toward them. I just hate them. No one’s going to take me down, I have to go out there and destroy them.” If you’re looking for a definition of a “closer mentality”, I think that would be it. Just a great look at Adam Reifer by BA. Peoria 10, Scottsdale 7 Adam Ottavino packed his struggles and took them with him to Arizona. He lasted two innings, allowing three runs on five hits. His teammate ...

[image] Peo Javelinas 8, Surprise 7 ( box ) While we were able to see the AFL debuts of several Indians players two days ago, the second game of the season lifted the curtain on a couple more.  Unfortunately, Chuck Lofgren likely wishes that the curtain would just stay put as he was torched for six earned runs in one-third of an inning. The Rafters came out swinging, putting up five runs in the first three innings.  Left fielder Stephen Head helped the cause, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Josh Tomlin (he of the 109 strikeouts in 102 innings with the Kinston Indians) got the start and fanned five batters in three innings of two-hit ball.  Lofgren took the ...

We've talked about Manny Ramirez a bit in this space lately, and I think the vast majority of us would be in favor of the Mets bringing him in on a three-year deal at aging superstar money (~$15-17 million per season). Well, you can count Wallace Matthews among those dissenting voices in the crowd. His argument? They should've traded for him in July when the price was "low": They, along with every other team in baseball, had their shot at Manny in July, when the increasingly tense relationship between him and the Red Sox finally reached its breaking point. Things had gotten so bad that the Red Sox were happy to pay the remaining $7 million ...

Jim Callis has his early bird mock draft through the first ten picks. The million dollar question is - will the Nats, who refused to sign Aaron Crow, pony up the megabucks needed to sign Stephen Strasburg? Callis rounds out the top ten with Mizzou right-hander Kyle Gibson going to the Nats tenth. Along with suddenly becoming a football school, Mizzou sure has become Pitcher U. as of late. Oh, speaking of Crow, Callis projects him to go to the Reds with the 8th pick. Peoria 9, Mesa 2 Shane Robinson went 3-5 with a homer.
