In the AFL, the Peoria Javelinas lost to the Peoria Saguaros 7-5: Box Score - Recap Kevin Whelan and Humberto Sanchez both pitched in relief for the Javelinas. Whelan pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while walking none and striking out three. Whelan threw 22 pithches, 15 of them for strikes. Things did not go as well for Sanchez, he allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in 0.2 innings pitches. Just 12 of the 32 pitches Sanchez threw were strikes. AzFL Peoria was off today, as was the rest of the league. Phil Hughes is scheduled to pitch for the Javelinas tomorrow; first pitch is at 12:35pm local (3:35 on the east coast). A Gameday link will appear closer to game time.

... Over at the Hardball Times, Victor Wang analyzes what Ben Sheets might be worth in free agency given his health and a team's relative aversion to risk. Sheets has had a lot of injury problems in the past, and heads into the offseason with a torn elbow muscle that may require surgery. The latest prognosis is that the elbow just needs rest and that it should be fine long-term (i.e. by next season).
