... in the stomach to a fan base that found, in Brand, the only true icon in franchise history. More immediately, it places the Clippers behind only Golden State and Memphis in the Cap Space Sweepstakes. The organization must quickly decide if it wants to pursue Corey Maggette, which would be a wrongheaded act of desperation, woo Josh Smith -- an intriguing, more youthful alternative at the PF, or stand pat for the 2009 free agent class. UPDATE: Stein has Maggette going to Oakland, and the Clips "making a hard run at ...

ESPN reports The Golden State Warriors on Tuesday conceded defeat in the chase for Elton Brand's signature by quickly moving on to new targets and reaching a faster-than-expected verbal agreement to sign unrestricted free agent Corey Maggette, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources told ESPN.com that Maggette decided against waiting to see if the Los Angeles Clippers would lose Brand to the Philadelphia 76ers -- which could have created an opportunity to stay with the Clippers -- to take a multi-year offer from the Warriors at a starting salary above the mid-level ...

... Meanwhile, the Warriors went from Baron Davis to Corey Maggette, contrary to earlier reports of him signing with San Antonio. The Warriors also lost Mickael Pietrus to the Magic for the full midlevel exception, the one they were offering to Maggette originally. Pietrus will be a backup in Orlando, which already has two strong SF's in Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu, while Maggette should start at the 3, with Stephen Jackson at the 2 and Monta Ellis at the 1. ...
Elton Brand to the Sixers, Maggette to the Warriors

... and Corey Maggette have both reached deals with new teams, the latter situation being no surprise (the Clippers renounced his rights in order make room to resign Brand), the former something as a shock to the system (like I said, the Clippers renounced Maggette’s rights - not to mentioned came to terms with Baron Davis - in order to resign Brand). Oh well, there’s always Tim Thomas to fall back on. I’ll have more thoughts on this when I get a minute, but to hit the high points, I see a bad moon rising for these Clippers in a big way. ... You think Baron Davis is regretting his move to the Clippers? He commited to sign there thinking Elton Brand was coming back… but its looking like he’s going to Philly for 5 years/$82 mil. Meanwhile, Corey Maggette is getting more than the MLE to go to Golden State. If you believe the analysis on TrueHoop, Maggette is about to get overpaid. Still nothing on Posey.
I wonder if Baron can back out now that he knows Elton is going to leave?

On paper, at least, they looked respectable. This was, of course, contingent on Elton Brand staying to solidify things around a core of Davis, goofy center Chris Kaman and rookie Eric Gordon. Now, it appears, Davis is going to be all by himself. How lonely. Brand has apparently agreed to accept a big 'ol deal from the 76ers and, in a move not surprising many, Corey Maggette is on his way out of Los Angeles as well. So, what was all that talk about Davis swooping in ...

If the Spurs bring the same general roster back from last year, if Finley sees meaningful minutes, or Horry sees any minutes, or if Buford and company sign Kurt Thomas and pretend he's anything short of another piece to throw on the scrap heap, I swear to everything that is holy that I will openly root ...
