Outfielder Reed Johnson is a likely candidate to go on the disabled list with back problems. Johnson claims to be feeling better, although the final decision is up to the team’s medical staff. That would save Murton, Hoffpauir and Patterson from a return to Iowa until at least Friday, when one of them is expected to be sent down to make room for Daryle Ward. I can only hope that the plan is not to carry around two backup first basemen who both hit left handed. ...

The Cubs begin a string of 13 straight on Tuesday night with the first of three against the Baltimore Orioles. The Cubs will make a roster move before the game to make room for Sean Marshall to replace Carlos Zambrano in the starting rotation. The Cubs promoted former Notre Dame star Jeff Samardzija to Triple-A Iowa, where he'll replace Sean Marshall in the rotation beginning Tuesday. Samardzija, who signed a $10 million deal in 2007, was 3-5 with a 4.86 ERA at Double-A Tennessee. "His last five outings have been real good," said Oneri Fleita, Cubs vice president of player personnel.
