Quote: "He had a mixed drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other," Vince said. "And my wife's comment was 'He can barely put a sentence together.'" Also, the witnesses apparently overheard Hancock admitting he was fined by Tony La Russa last week for being too hungover to play in a day game. [link]

It seems the link is dead right now -- hopefully the story will be re-published and it's not being squashed.

As a parent, the first question I always have is: was he wearing seat belts?  I'm always astonished by how many people don't wear seat belts (most recent example: the New Jersey governor, Corzine, who actually apologized about it).

"I also had a very important caution: Be careful of the insincerity of some media people … trying to befriend you then trying to slam you with something that they want to turn this into, some kind of story that's not all sweet," La Russa said. "I've already seen signs of that. I'm sitting here listening. The first time I hear insincerity I'll start swinging this fungo because it doesn't have its place."
So a little note to those of the media covering the Cardinals:
Everything you write better be sweet, regardless of the real facts, or Tony will beat you with a baseball bat.

I used to love Tony, but my opinion of him drops everytime he opens his mouth.

Hancock is dead, no one else was physically injured in the accident. Can't they just let it go? I don't see the point in trying to bash a guy after he's died. Note: I'm a Cubs fan.

Sure, no point in dragging Hancock through the mud.  But we should be able to expect more responsible behavior out of La Russa.

I just having a problem with someone bashing the media for doing their job.  They're supposed to dig up the facts, they're supposed to uncover the truth.  Castigating them for not writing what you want to hear is just plain stupid.

Since an enormous amount of auto accidents involve alcohol...why is it shocking that this unfortunate cause may be attributed to a baseball player.  My prayers are with his family.

... reported that Hancock had been involved in a car accident at 5:30 am Thursday morning, while the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jake Wagman went a step or two further. Wagman ran quotes from two persons who refused to give their last names, claiming that Hancock a) was drunk and incoherent less than two hours before the accident that claimed his life Sunday morning, and b) he’d been fined by Tony La Russa after “drinking all night” on Wednesday and turning up late for the following afternoon’s matinee.

Cards La Russa takes pre-emptive shot at media

... Cards manager Tony La Russa seemed to fire a pre-emptive shot at the media Monday. He said he told his club to be leery of the media seeking to exploit events. "I also had a very important caution: Be careful of the insincerity of some media people … trying to befriend you then try to slam you with something that they want to turn this into, some kind of story that's not all sweet," La Russa said. "I've already seen signs of that. I'm sitting here listening. The first time I hear insincerity I'll start swinging this fungo because it doesn't have its place." Pressed about his message, La Russa said, "I'm just talking about people who really don't care about us, who are out there trying to further their own agendas. That's exactly what I mean."

... The man who sat near Hancock at Shannon's Saturday night — who asked to be identified only as Vince — said he overheard Cards pitcher Josh Hancock tell ESPN's Dave Campbell that he missed the start of Thursday's game because he had spent the previous night drinking. Hancock told Campbell that Tony La Russa fined him $500, according to the man. "They were standing behind us at the bar, probably for about 45 minutes," said a second witness, Vince's wife, who did not want her name revealed. She said Hancock had "several" drinks. ... Hancock was on his way to join a group of Cardinals teammates at Café Napoli in Clayton about 12:30 a.m. Sunday when his Ford Explorer ran into a 26,000 pound lift truck dispatched to an earlier accident. Hancock had text messaged a member of the group, which included center fielder Jim Edmonds, relief pitcher Ryan Franklin, catcher Gar

Late Cards pitcher was in traffic accident days before death

... Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock was in a potentially serious traffic accident less than three days before the one that took his life Sunday, according to police reports. Hancock walked away from that early Thursday morning crash uninjured, but he was late for the team's afternoon game a few hours later. The club and several teammates said he had overslept. ... That brings me to an article in today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch about Josh Hancock. Joe Strauss and Jake Wagman report that Hancock was drunk at a restaurant owned by a former Cardinal on Saturday night before leaving the restaurant to meet some teammates at another location. He was killed in a car accident shortly after leaving Mike Shannon's Steaks and Seafood and the two writers quote two sources, identified only as Vince and Vince's wife, as saying Hancock was visibly intoxicated while talking with ESPN analyst Dave Campbell. They also report that Hancock, who was involved in another car accident early Thursday morning, arrived at the Cardinal clubhouse too hung over to play in Thursday's game.
