Cubs 6, Marlins 3; Queue that music
Published 7/24/2008 by Damen Jackson at Cubbie Nation - Notes from the Front Office
And fly that flag. The Cubs got back to their winning ways at Wrigley last night - their first game there in nearly two weeks - beating the Florida Marlins 6-3. It was their second win in a row, and allowed them to continue to stay ahead of the surging Brewers, who got a late home run from Ryan Braun to beat the Cardinals 4-3.
Was there something in the air last night at Wrigley? Just about every pitcher labored through the game. And I do mean labored. Even Carlos Zambrano, who picked up his 11th win of the season, toiled through his seven innings of work. Falling behind hitters, plenty of foul balls, and just really extended himself overall. It was not his finest ...
Fixing Kerry's Hands
Published 7/25/2008 by Wrigleyville (noreply@blogger.com) at wrigleyville23
The Cubs have tried everything apparently to get rid of Kerry Wood's blisters: Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal tried several remedies, including pickle juice, to no avail. Hendry said Wood has seen three doctors, and joked that he may have even attempted the "Moises Alou approach." Alou is known to urinate on his hands to limit calluses. The Moises Alou approach only works when Moises Alou does it, so the Cubs would need to track him down to pee on Kerry's hands.
Wood is Out, Samardzija is Coming, and Marmol Continues to Court Trouble
Published 7/25/2008 by Cubnut (noreply@blogger.com) at A Hundred Next Years
Before tonight's 6-3 win over the Marlins, the Cubs officially disabled Kerry Wood. After the win, the Cubs officially summoned righthander Jeff Samardzija from Iowa. Though Samardzija appeared to be a candidate to share in middle-inning relief duties while Wood was out and Carlos Marmol slipped into the closer's role, Gordon Wittenmyer writes in the Sun-Times that Samardzija might start one of this weekend's games against Florida, which would allow Lou Piniella to give Rich Harden an extra day's rest. As Wittenmyer points out, A Saturday start would push back Rich Harden's scheduled start to his sixth day -- a schedule that produced good ...
Closing Time: Code Red in St. Louis
Published 7/25/2008 by Scott Pianowski at Roto Arcade
Throw the flags and sound the sirens; it's time to put the
St. Louis bullpen on 24/7 watch until further notice. Things have been really
messy in the Gateway City of late, especially in the ninth inning, and changes
can't be far off.
Ryan Franklin was a handy fill-in closer for a while, but he
was never considered a long-term solution in that role and lately things have
fallen apart. He allowed his second
game-winning homer of the week Thursday, a Ryan Braun blast to left-center, and
the entire NL seems to be digging in against Franklin of late (he's allowed 10
runs and five homers over his last 11 appearances). Nothing affects a team's
psyche quite like a blown ...
"Moises Alou Approach" unable to cure Kerry Wood's blister
Published 7/25/2008 by noreply@blogger.com (Bryan) at OUT OF RIGHT FIELD
Kerry Wood is unfortunately on the DL now with his troublesome blister. The blister is expected to heal soon & then Wood will have to get his arm back into game shape and back into his routine. With that move, comes the move of ...
