Woody Williams was put on unconditional release waivers Saturday by Houston Astros, who owe the pitcher $6.5 million. The 41-year-old right-hander was 8-15 with a 5.27 ERA last season and had an 11.32 ERA in spring training this year. He gave up five runs and five hits in three innings during Friday's 10-0 exhibition loss to Detroit.

... The Astros have put Woody Williams on waivers, for the purpose of giving him his release.
He's owed $6.5 million this season, which the Astros will have to pay him. The Astros paid him $6 million last season, for 188 innings in which he provided an ERA+ of 83. And signing him cost the Astros their 2nd round pick in 2007 (it would have cost them a first rounder, had they not also signed Carlos Lee).
Richard Justice defended the signing earlier this spring, which is another reason why you probably should listen to what Richard Justice thinks ...
