Thinking About Mike Mussina
Published 2/17/2008 by jscape2000 <info@pinstripealley.com> at Pinstripe Alley: Front Page Posts
This little tidbit caught my attention over at LoHud: Meanwhile, Hughes has his locker moved. It was Mike Mussina's idea. He wanted Hughes on one side and Ian Kennedy on the other so he talk to the kids all spring. Mussina gets a lot of bad press ...
The Real Hughes Stands Up?

... Phil Hughes threw a bullpen session Friday and, according to Pete Abraham, is beginning to get his mojo back. Not to imply Hughes pitched poorly in 2007, but it was obvious he was relying more on guile and guts than the electric stuff he is known for. ...

... into the question of Joba Chamberlain’s role at the beginning of the season, saying, “Joba is competing for a spot in the starting rotation and preparing to be a starter.” However, Girardi’s definition of “competing” may be more loose than most, as he also said that Kei Igawa would be competing for a starting role. ...
Phil feeling good

Phil Hughes is happy with his first few days of Spring Training:
Everything is going well so far at camp. I threw my first bullpen today and I’m happy with where my arm strength is at this point of the spring. I feel like being in Tampa early and throwing some sides before really helped.
Peter Abraham was very impressed with what he saw from Hughes today as well.

Last season, Phil Hughes' fastballs were averaging 89 to 92 miles an hour. However, reports said that Phil usually threw around 92 to 95 MPH. Even Brian Cashman noticed the drop in velocity last year.
Yesterday, Peter Abraham offered an explantion to this issue, from Hughes himself:
Watched Phil Hughes throw and was impressed with his fastball. After his leg injury in May, he said his heater was 91-92 instead of the usual 93-95 it is. “It wasn’t until the playoffs when I felt complete confidence in my leg,” he said. “That was when I got ...
Yankees saying and doing all the right things

... Not to overly link to PeteAbe, but he also had a great bit on Phil Hughes and his impressive bullpen workout. This came with a great quote from Hughes: “It wasn’t until the playoffs when I felt complete confidence in my leg,” he said. “That was when I got my fastball back.” That makes us all feel better. ...
Bronx Banter: Wrapping Up Week One
Published 2/22/2008 at Baseball Toaster
... , another veteran in his walk year with something to prove after a poor 2007, and Phil Hughes , who lost a lot of time to injury last year, have arrived with a "sense of purpose." I'm not sure what that really means, but Abraham did follow up by reporting on strong bullpen outings from both of them. Hughes and Chamberlain have also been seen working out with Andy Pettitte doing a reduced version of the Roger Clemens workout which, for all of the wisecracks that can be made given the Mitchell Report fallout, is no joke. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com has more ...
