Royals payroll lower than reported?
Published 4/10/2007 by Ben Maller at Ben Maller's Sports Rumors & Notes
... Published reports last week deceptively showed the Royals with a payroll of $67,166,500 on opening day. That figure appears to include the full value for contracts to pitcher Odalis Perez and catcher Jason LaRue. The Royals aren’t paying full value. They are paying just $1.7 million of Perez’s $7.75 million deal, and only $2.5 million of LaRue’s $5.45 million deal. The cited payroll also doesn’t include the club’s $3.25 million obligation to minor-league shortstop Angel Berroa. There are a few other small differences, so a better estimate for the Royals’ payroll on opening day is either $61.1 million with Berroa or $57.8 million without Berroa. Either one represents a jump from last year’s $47.3 million.
