... The trade deadline at the end of next month is beginning to loom, and Mike Sweeney knows his name could become a fixture in the rumor mill. But Sweeney has a hunch he’s going to remain a Royal at least through this season, the final year of his contract. “If I were a gambling man,” Sweeney said, “I’d say I’d be with the Royals through the end of the season, and then we’d see after that. But I guess you never know.” Sweeney isn’t exactly powerless in this situation. As a 10-5 guy — 10 years in the league and five continuous with one team — Sweeney can veto any trade the Royals might present to him. The question is: Would he? What if the Royals were able to ship him to southern California, close to home, to a contender? Say perhaps the Angels? Some players in Sweeney’s position might consider that a pretty sweet going-away gift, considering Sweeney has never really played in a pennant race. “Well

It's a bit early in the baseball season to get too involved in trade rumors, anything before July 15 is really too early to know who's a buyer and who's a seller, but a little note about Mike Sweeney caught our eye. The Kansas City Star wonders if the longtime Royal designated injury list resident might be interested in heading to another team so he can get a taste of a pennant race. As a 10-and-5 man, Sweeney can veto any trade but he's from Southern California and the Angels could use an upgrade for Shea Hillenbrand to stay ahead of the frisky Mariners. So would he be interested?
