The Pre-Game Plus: 6/23 @ Real Salt Lake
Published 6/22/2007 by Max J. at The Offside
... There are some games that just defy the need for analysis, and this is one of them. Salt Lake is, point blank, a pathetic excuse for a soccer team, so bad that you wonder why the local paper hasn’t called in Joe Posnanski to write a requiem for the season already (sorry, arcane baseball reference). United is at full strength (for this game, at least) and in the middle of a tear. A team of their talent and ambition has absolutely no business dropping points in Utah. So the choice, and the commentary, is simple: DC can either go in and drop the hammer as great teams do to the unworthy, or they can suck their way to a draw or loss. The latter is humiliating at best and confidence-shattering at the worst, a sign that United is really no more than a mid-table team. No other option than a win is acceptable. ...

... ns won the Japan Series four games to one, and this is their first Japanese Championship since 1954. It is, for Dragons manager Hiromitsu Ochiai – one of Japan’s greatest players – a breakthrough victory. He had taken the Dragons to the Japan Series twice and lost both times – including last season against Trey Hillman and the Fighters."Second, the departure. This was the last game in Japan for incoming Royals manager Trey Hillman. He sat on the bench and stared out toward the field after the game ended, his face flush. He knew his time here was coming to an end, and he may have even known it could end with a loss. But he certainly did not expect to leave the country this way, having lost the first perfect game in Japan Series history (and the first at any time since 1994). Hillman will now go back to Sapporo to pack up things and do a final round of interviews before coming home to America to take over the Royals."
