2008 marks the final season that the New York Yankees play at Yankee Stadium. I think there is an expectation from passionate baseball fans that people should attend a game at Yankee Stadium before it closes. However, with limited time available to attend a weekend game over the next few months and the high cost of tickets, I am questioning whether or not I should try to go.

Babe Ruth, naturally, is running away in our poll to determine a new First Class for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Well, sure he is. Ruth is a pretty clear choice as the best baseball player ever. He practically invented the home run. He may not have “saved” baseball after the Black Sox scandal in the purest sense but he sure took the game to a new level of popularity. He had a career 207 ...The Train Keeps A-Rollin’

Amidst my rundown of the Shawn Chacon rumble in the Houston Astros’ team mess, I referenced Babe Ruth once hanging manager Miller Huggins over the rear end of a moving train, outraged over being fined yet again for breaking team rules. Turns out I just might owe an apology over all that . . . to the Bambino, wherever he is. Baltimore Sun columnist Bill Ordine—weighing in ...John Grabow: The Next Jewish Yankees' Left Hander?

by Harold Friend A New York City tabloid reported recently that Yankees’ scout Bill Emslie had been sent to watch Pittsburgh Pirates’ left handed relief pitcher John Grabow, which is not surprising since the Yankees have been seeking a reliable lefty specialist since the departure of Australian Graeme Lloyd almost a decade ago. What is interesting is that John Grabow is one of a handful of ...Bonds Vs. Ruth — Will Return Next Thursday

Back in February, Ed Valentine and I got into a debate over who was better — Babe Ruth or The G-POPE Barry Bonds. In a four-part series with the help of WhatIfSports.com , Bugs & Cranks hopes to add new perspective to the debate…. The idea is to switch these two all-time greats in time — what if Bonds quantum leaped into Ruth’s place on the Red Sox and Yankees ...Final edit on Robinson's Cooperstown plaque

When Jackie Robinson was on the Hall of Fame ballot in 1962, he requested that the voters among the Baseball Writers Association of America judge him only as a player. He didn't want his social significance as the modern major leagues' first black player to be considered. Vote for him - or don't vote for him — on his merits as a player, as all the other Hall of Famers from Babe Ruth and ...I knew I wasn’t the only one

Back in 1989 I was among the seemingly millions of baseball fans fascinated with the “Cuban Babe Ruth”, Jose Canseco. He had power, speed, giant muscles, an MTV girlfriend, and best of all, attitude. In the 17 seasons Jose played in the Majors I have never once seen a pitcher intentionally plunk him. Back in the 80’s and early 90’s that would have been suicide. ...“If Babe Ruth Didn’t Save Baseball . . . “

I was (and remain) as devoted to my grandparents, God rest their souls in peace, as is his granddaughter to Babe Ruth, God rest his soul in peace. But, then, I’m not looking for baseball to retire my grandparents’ number all across the board, period, never mind drawing upon mythology rather than history to justify it. I know it’s for sociological reasons, but why should ...Should #3 Be Retired?

Babe Ruth’s granddaughter has been raising a stink about her grandfather’s number, and the fact that it should be retired throughout the MLB. While she has been trying to get this to happen for years, she brought it up again when she recently did a radio interview. Jackie Robinson’s #42 is retired throughout the league. Wayne Gretzky’s #99 is retired throughout the ...When the Yankees Almost Traded Waite Hoyt for Eddie Collins

by Harold Friend Waite Hoyt replaced Babe Ruth when the Babe left Boston’s starting rotation to play the outfield full-time. Hoyt had pitched one game for the New York Giants in 1918 and then joined the Red Sox the following season. In December 1920, Waite Hoyt was sent to the Yankees in a multi-player deal. With the Yankees, Hoyt became a top starter, winning 19 games in both 1921 and 1922, ...Ruth’s daughter wants to see 3 retired

Should the Babe’s number be retired throughout baseball? That’s the cause Ruth’s granddaughter, Linda Ruth Tosetti, has been pushing for a while. This weekend, Rick Maese sat down and grilled Tosetti on the issue . In short, she feels that the Babe’s feel-good popularity saved baseball after the 1919 Black Sox scandal, and for that, his number should be retired ...
