New Arod deal likely opts out of recognition for BBWAA awards---NY Times
Published 11/25/2007 by susan mullen at XM MLB Chat
Naturally the addition of BBWAA incentives adds luster to the group. The removal or lack of them diminishes it though not nearly enough. That will come in time. Boras is one who championed a lustrous "Oscar" like telecast for BBWAA awards. (The main focus of the NY Times article is the structure of home run incentives in the new contract and doesn't get into the BBWAA of which the author is a non-voting member as a NY Times employee). (sm) (Murray Chass): "The contract will not have the kinds of award bonuses that filled Rodriguez’s $252 million contract. In the seven years he played under the contract, Rodriguez earned $5.5 ...

A-Rod Marketing Deal Approved by MLB and MLBPA
Published 11/25/2007 by JMM at MY BASEBALL BIAS
From SI.com: Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees have agreed on a $30 million marketing package based on home-run achievements that could raise the total value of his new contract to $305 million over 10 years. Under the agreement, which remains to be finalized, Rodriguez could receive $6 million each for tying the home-run levels of Willie Mays (660), Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Barry Bonds (762), and an additional $6 million for breaking Bonds’ major league record. The Yankees could designate each level as a historic event, enabling Rodriguez to receive the added money in exchange for additional personal appearances ...

Cha-Ching! A-Rod Could Earn $305 Mil With New Contract
Published 11/25/2007 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
Rodriguez Could Earn an Extra $6 million in Special Bonuses Based on Homerun Milestones Only a physical and the wording of the contract remain for Alex Rodriguez to reunite with the New York Yankees, as the Commissioner’s Office and the MLB Players Association have signed off on the unique record-breaking contract that will pay a guaranteed $275 million over 10 years. But, those figures could be augmented further with certain nonguaranteed bonuses, based A-Rod’s ability to reach key homerun milestones. If he were to meet all those milestones, he would earn a total of ...

Morning Yankees Rumors
Published 11/25/2007 by Joe Pawlikowski at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
Just a few things I found scouring the Internets this morning. The team has finalized their marketing deal with Alex Rodriguez regarding his breaking of home run milestones. He'll receive $6 million for reaching the home run totals of Willy Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds. And then he'll get another $6 million for homer No. 763. Yes, that's $12 million for two homers. The deal has been approved by MLBPA and the Commissioner's office. Peter Gammons, via Buster Olney, reports that the Twins will be seeking three players in any trade to the ...

Sunday Morning Rockpile: Kennedy Remembered
Published 11/25/2007 by Russ <info@purplerow.com> at Purple Row: Front Page Posts
Troy Renck has a great piece on his memories of Joe Kennedy. ----- In off season contract news, Alex Rodriguez's new contract will have home run incentives in order to move the total possible value of the deal to $305M. It's going to be a media spectacle when Rodriguez approaches the all-time record. The Reds spent $46M over four years for Francisco Cordero recently. Wow, the Reds spent some money. The move certainly makes the bullpen look better, but it's not going to make the team a contender.

Bronx Banter: Is it the Christmas Meetings Yet?
Published 11/26/2007 at Baseball Toaster
...While Waiting for the Alex Rodriguez contract to get done... I'm sure you've heard some Johan Santana gossip over the weekend. Here is a bit of leftover Sunday Turkey from Buster Olney : Our colleague Peter Gammons is hearing that the Twins want this three-player package from the Yankees, in any Santana conversation: pitcher Phil Hughes and center fielders Melky Cabrera and Austin Jackson. Given that the Yankees will probably be asked to pay Santana a deal of at least six years and $150 million to convince him to stay, I'd be shocked if they seriously considered that trade. Part of the equation for the Yankees or any other teams, as they make decisions about a ...

Hunt for Santana is on
Published 11/26/2007 by Dave & Aziz Nekoukar at NJ.com: Pride of the Yankees
The Yanks are prepared to take a shot at acquiring one of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball, Johan Santana. Mark Feinsand tells us that the Yankees are gauging the Twins' asking price. Feinsand notes that the team will hold its annual budget meetings in New York this week (wait -- the Yanks have a budget?), and adds that it could take $25 million per year to keep Santana in the fold once a team acquires him. Pete Caldera values Santana similarly , saying the lefty could command $150 million over seven years (about $21.5 million per). He also has a full no-trade clause. Feinsand said "it is believed" that the Twins are hot after Robinson Cano. If Cano ...

Morning Munchies: Redskins Star Safety Taylor Shot, New BCS Leaders and the Patriots Don’t Cover
Published 11/26/2007 by Tim at Mind Rite Sports -- Quality, diverse sports coverage
Redskins safety Sean Taylor was reportedly shot during a burglary in his Florida home . Hope it isn’t as serious are the reports say . Missouri’s upset over Kansas moved them into the 1 spot on the BCS standings. West Virginia rolled through UConn to overtake No. 2 . Six untimely (as if any turnover can be “timely,” really) turnovers led to a Washington defeat in Tampa Bay, 19-13 . I guess that 24 point spread was a bit premature, eh? The Eagles hung in and lost a close one to those stinkin’ Pats, 31-28 . Not surprisingly, a “few” voices in Philly say Feeley should take over McNabb’s job whether the incumbent is healthy or ...
