Yankees can't allow Santana to join Red Sox
There are a bunch of excellent reasons why the Yankees should stifle the urge to acquire Johan Santana - their spotty history of signing highly touted starting pitchers to lucrative free-agent contracts, the terrible cost in young talent it would require to get him here, the possibility that as tough as everyone says Santana is, he may just not have the internal wiring to thrive in New York, and the reality that as great as he has been, Santana, like all pitchers, is always one bad delivery from a ... MLB Rumors: Jose Reyes For Johan Santana?
Published 11/29/2007 at FakeTeams
... And if this report from Wallace Matthews of Long Island's Newsday is correct, then the Mets would have to include Reyes to top the Yankees' offer.  He relays from "an organizational source [that told him] yesterday they would now consider parting not just with Kennedy or Hughes, but Kennedy and Hughes plus Cabrera, if that's what it takes. In that case, the Yankees would pursue Rowand to replace him in center."  (Yeah, why not slip an Aaron Rowand rumor in there, too?) ...

Who's this Santana guy?
Published 11/29/2007 by Dave & Aziz Nekoukar at NJ.com: Pride of the Yankees
... . Wallace Matthews says the Yanks can't let the Red Sox get Santana . We've read that thought in a lot of places, and it doesn't make much sense to us. We understand that the Yankees should do what they can to prevent the Sox from landing Santana, but the Yanks can't "force" or "let" the Sox do anything. If Boston is willing to part with Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz -- that's fine by us. Seriously. That'd be a nice chunk of future they'd be mortgaging. People are ignoring that, by landing an ace in the form of Santana, there will be an effect -- whether it's slight, or ...

Newsday: Matthews: Yankees can’t allow Santana to join Red Sox
Published 11/29/2007 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
Newsday: Matthews: Yankees can’t allow Santana to join Red Sox BWAA! (Boxing Writers Association of America) BWAA! BWAA! That, of course, would be disaster, and the end of baseball as we have come to know it around here. If Santana goes to Boston, the Yankees go to second place in the American League East for the rest of George Steinbrenner’s life, and maybe Hank Steinbrenner’s, too. It’s as simple as that. ..."With Hank in charge, the feeling is we’ve got to win now,” the source said. “We’ve got to show our fans we’re not waiting around, that we’re committed to winning right ...

Should the Yankees give up Hughes?
Published 12/1/2007 by ETVal at Valentine's Views
... season. Jorge Posada was right. To knock Boston off the throne the Yankees need an ace. NOW!! "We need a No.1, and I think that's one of the reasons we're going after Santana," Posada said. "It is a need in October, no question about it. When you look at the past World Series champions, they were able to have a No.1 throwing at least two games to win the title."Wallace Matthews of Newsday makes the point that the Yankees have to keep Santana away from Boston. Period. If Santana goes to Boston, ...
