ETVal +1Unfortunately, the Yankees have a bigger need than the Red Sox. They can't wait and hope Hughes or Chamberlain becomes an ace, and let Boston get Santana. They have to make this move. If it cost them Hughes that sucks, but they still have to do it. http://valentinesviews.blogspot.com/2007/11/should-yankees-give-up-hughes.html -
Evil Empire Two days to figure out that they'd rather have the 28yo best pitcher in baseball over a kid who MIGHT become a staff ace someday. That's using your heads, guys. -
Ben Q. Rock I'd rather not trade Hughes. Actually, I'd rather not trade Melky, either.-
ETVal Well, I would hate to see Hughes go. But, you get a Hall of Fame pitcher in his prime for a guy who MIGHT be good and a decent center fielder. Yanks have to do this.

Yankees Boost Their Offer

According to this, Phil Hughes is now part of the package to land Santana.
Now, if I am the Twins, I turn to Boston and say ok, now you guys have to give us Buchholz or Ellsbury. If they do, I turn around and say to the Yankees, ok now you top that offer.
That's the problem with this negotiation in my mind, the Twins control it all and the longer they draw it out, the better it is for them. So, if I am the Yankees, I set a deadline. You tell the Twins, this is our best offer and not only are we not improving it, we are pulling it by Monday. ...

The guys at River Ave. Blues think Cashman was against it, Gene Michael was for it, and the Hammer broke the tie. This one is far from done, but it's looking bleak if you dig young pitchers who could dominate for the next 15 years. If/when this deal gets made, I'll get my mind around it and get behind Santana. Before that happens, I want to go on the record as saying I am not confident that Santana is going to dominate in New York. I ...

Yankees Will Include Hughes

... The Yankees plan to include Phil Hughes in the deal that would bring Johan to Santana to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera and Juan Tabata, according to the New York Daily News. Personally, I think the Twins would have been smart to try and get two of their better pitchers, like Ian Kennedy and Jeffery Marquez, along with Cabrera and Tabata. You then acquire four potential studs to lead the Twins in a new direction. Whichever trade goes down, whether it is with the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers, the Twins are definitely the winners. ...

... Meanwhile, Theo Epstein sat in his office at 4 Yawkey Way, hardly concerned at all. Earlier today, a report from the New York Daily News revealed that the Yankees were now willing to part with a superior pitching prospect, Phil Hughes, to land Santana. A package of Hughes, Cabrera, and one or two prospects tailored to match Minnesota’s needs would surely trounce the Red Sox’s offer, but Epstein had little reason to be worried. His offer, in tandem with Hank Steinbrenner’s ill-advised decision to run his mouth and Jorge Posada’s poorly timed ...

Published 12/1/2007 by El Guapo's Ghost at El Guapo's Ghost Rambles on about the Red Sox
... The Sox have succeed as the MFY are now going to move Phil Hughes in a deal for Santana. Hughes has true #1 stuff like Clay Buchholz. As we know, these type of players are the rarest commodity and having pocket aces in October gives your club the best shot at hoisting a flag next April. Since the Twins refuse to pay market rate for a true power #1, acquiring another potential replacement at the minimum cost is a slam dunk. It is likely that either Hughes or Liriano in the next two years will match Santana’s production at a fraction of the price. ...
