Yanks Add Pudge
Published 7/30/2008 by Brian at Depressed Fan
Buster Olney is reporting a shocking deal. The Yanks have apparently traded Kyle Farnsworth for Ivan Rodriguez. Wow. Farnsworth had settled in as the 8th inning guy for the Yanks, but look at it this way, he's still the same pitcher who struggled mightily for the past couple of seasons. The Yankee pen was absolutely a strength, and they dealt Farnsworth while his value was at its highest. In Pudge they get a guy who can shut down the running game and will at least top Jose Molina's offensive production. Pudge is hitting .295 with a .338 OBP and slugging .417. I ...

... ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that the New York Yankees have filled their vacant catcher’s spot by trading reliever Kyle Farnsworth to the Detroit Tigers for Pudge Rodriguez . It’s fairly obvious why the Yankees would do this. Without the injured Jorge Posada for the rest of the season, the team would have been relying on Jose Molina to get way too many at-bats between now and October. Molina has an OPS of .586 and a negative offensive Win Share of -1.4 so far in 2008 and that just won’t do for anyone, let alone the vaunted Yankees. Pudge is having a decent bounce back ...

... Now to the other deal that sends Kyle Farnsworth back to the Detroit Tigers for catcher Ivan Rodriguez. To state the obvious on Farnsworth a 94% strand rate won't last either, and whether a career low LD% against lasts or not is up for debate. Pudge to the Yankees - thoughts?
Published 7/31/2008 by Scott Caruso at Rays of Light
Story Certainly it improves the Yankees offensively at the catcher position, as Jose Molina is terrible. But I’m not so sure he’s a defensive upgrade. Plus, the Yankees pitchers supposedly love throwing to Molina. Even though the idea of a catcher who “calls a good game” is probably overrated, what’s not overrated is the fact that a prima-donna pitcher who THINKS he can’t throw to a guy probably won’t be able to.
