The offer is expected to be six years in length and have a total value of slightly more that the record $137.5 million deal that pitcher Johan Santana signed with the Mets before last season.
That’s about $6 million more a season than I would have offered as a starting point. But, I guess the Yankees mean business on this one. I hope they don’t go too much higher than this offer. Anything else ...

... , their number one target in what promises to be an aggressive free agency season. According to ESPN.com , the offer is expected to trump Johan Santana s contract which was a record for a pitcher. The contract offer could be as much as six years and even more than Santana s $137.5 million. The Steinbrenners will not hold back if there is a chance of luring the big lefty to open the new Yankee Stadium. Free agency Friday
The Tao of Stieb —
... Just because agents won't be accepting offers on behalf of their clients on the first day of free agency, doesn't mean they won't listen. As expected, it didn't take the fucking Yankees long to set the bar by extending a record-setting offer of employment (for a pitcher) to the cream of the free agent crop, Carsten Charles Sabathia. And can I say something here? CC doesn't frighten me. Oh, I know what a ludicrous statement that is. But he just doesn't. I don't know why, but it might have something to do with the fact that I can't see a 6'7, 300+ lb man hold up for the ...
The Fundamentals of our Economy are Sound....for CC Sabathia
Respect Jeter's Gangster —
The Yankees have made their move on one Charles Constantine Sabathia* as they have offered a contract of 6 years and $140 million. This is slightly larger than the contract the Mets offered Santana last year. First offers tend to not get accepted, so I would expect those 140 millions to be met with a few more millions to make it a lot more millions than I'll ever see. I don't see another team ponying up the money, because not too many other teams with money are that desperate. The Cubs, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers don't need pitching that badly, and the Angels and Dodgers are ...
