YaoPau +3Maybe Hank Steinbrenner should stop using negotiating tactics that I used trading baseball cards in junior high. I'd love to see the Yanks give up on the league's best pitcher just because the Twins didn't play by their rules. -
Ben Q. Rock Doesn't this mean the Sox get Santana by default? I mean, why should the Twins cave? Stupid move.

It is in Santana’s interest to be traded now because he will require a monster contract to approve a deal. It is expected that the contract would be at least six years and $120 million, and rather than enter the season with the risk of injury, he would prefer the deal to be struck as soon as possible. Monday D-Day For Yanks & Johan?

From Jon Heyman -
The Yankees have set a Monday deadline for the Twins to respond to their proposed trade of top young pitcher Phil Hughes, center fielder Melky Cabrera and a third prospect for superstar pitcher Johan Santana, SI.com has learned.
So assuming the Yankees strictly stick to their deadline, it is very likely there will be a resolution regarding Santana -- widely considered baseball's best pitcher -- by the end of Monday.
If true, it's a smart move by the Yankees. They have made a legit (and generous) offer for ...

... The Yanks have put a timer on the Hughes/Melky/Warm Body offer. The Twins have until end of day Monday to accept, or the Yanks move on. It seems like this deadline isn't being taken too seriously. I hope it passes, the Yanks take Hughes off the table and tell the Twins the offer is now Kennedy, Melky and Tabata. Take it or leave it. ...
Some Good News??

Well, the Yankees obviously took my advice and set a deadline with the Twins.
Furthermore, Fox reports that Santana will only agree to a trade now, so Minnesota cannot drag this out indefinitely.
And, the Yankees apparently won't give into the Twins request for Kennedy, Horne or Jackson as the third part of this trade, so I would guess he isn't coming to New York.
Just prepare yourself for what that means. It means a risky rotation in 2008 and the potential for Boston to have Santana and Beckett at the top of theirs. I said it in ...

The booty - Lester, Ellsbury, Lowrie - I’m proposing sending to Florida, would be partially replaced by the return for Youkilis. The Cards, Brewers, Giants, Phillies, and Twins all have a need for an inexpensive third baseman either in terms of dollars or players. And apparently, we'll know much more later today on what's going on with Johan Santana. *** Scrubs is a goofy sitcom but ...

2. Trade talks heat up at winter meetings.
