Gernal manager Brian Cashman confirmed the Yankees have signed lefty Eric Milton to a minor-league contract.
Milton, who turns 33 next month, is still recovering from "Tommy John" surgery. He threw on flat ground today in Tampa, Fla., and is at least six weeks away from pitching in games.
"If he does anything to help us this year, that's fine," Cashman said. "We're just going to have a chance to get an advance look (for 2009)."
Milton was the Yankees' No. 1 draft pick in 1996 but they traded him to Minnesota ...

The centerpiece in the 1998 deal for Chuck Knoblauch, Milton is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and is still six weeks away from game action. Cashman said this was really just to get “an advance look” for next year. Milton had several solid seasons for the Twins before getting his brains beat in for the Phillies and Reds. How’s the saying go, “there’s no such thing as a bad minor league deal?” Yeah, that’s it. ...

Former Yankees first round pick Eric Milton has returned to the club, thanks to a minor league deal, reports Ed Price . Milton is at least six weeks away from contributing anything, thanks to Tommy John surgery. Back in 1998, he was traded to the Twins in a prospect package to acquire Chuck Knoblauch. Cashman indicated to Price that part of the motivation behind the signing is to be able to see what Milton might be able to offer the team in 2009.
