The Yankees have interest in free agent Kevin Mench as a fifth outfielder, according to a person with knowledge of discussions who asked not to be named because no deal has been struck. Meanwhile, Robinson Cano's four-year, $30 million contract should be completed as soon as the team has results of a physical he took last week, agent Bobby Barad said. Mench, 30, would probably go to Yankees ... [link]

It's hard to get the focus back on baseball today; we're still too filled with glee. But here goes. Andy Pettitte took his turn in Washington, D.C. yesterday, being deposed in preparation for his February 13 appearance before congress. Pettitte refused to speak with reporters before or after his 2- 1/2 hr appearance. Pettitte's lawyer re-iterated his client's stance. “Out of respect for the sensitive nature of these proceedings, and out of deference to the committee’s request for confidentiality, we, on behalf of Mr. Pettitte, will not comment on the nature or specifics of his testimony,” the lawyers ...

Mench to Bronx, Clark to LA?
Published 2/6/2008 by Eli at MLB Rumors
The Yankees continue their search for a right handed bat and have contacted outfielder Kevin Mench. Mench had great power early on Texas hitting 68 homeruns in just 423 games. Once he joined the Brewers his power dropped and he fell into a bench role. Still, he has the ability to play all three outfield positions if needed, and is pretty good coming off the bench. I know the Rangers had some interest earlier this week, but the Yankees might be able to lure him away if they offer a guaranteed deal. On the other side of the country, the Dodgers are looking for a lefty bench player and have approached both Mark Sweeney and Tony Clark. However, one NL executive ...

... first time since 1999 depends on assembling a back end of the rotation, and how healthy a collection of injury cases can stay. A lightning strike—like getting 1500 PAs out of Bradley, Hamilton, and Hank Blalock while Jennings, Kevin Millwood, and Vicente Padilla all recreate their peak seasons—could make them a contender, but in the long term, they’d be better off turning whatever good first halves they get into more prospect packages in the Mark Teixeira vein. Rounding The Bases With the Yanks
Published 2/7/2008 by Brian at Spring Training '08
It may not feel like it, but baseball is just around the corner. Residents in New Jersey experienced a premature spring today as temperatures rose into the high 60s.  Who cares that the balmy weather was accompanied by clouds, fog and a pesky drizzle, followed by a 30 degree drop by sundown?  For me it signaled the changing of the seasons, even though Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. The New York Yankees will report to their spring training home in Tampa in less than two weeks and I'm starting to catch the fever.  I've fallen a bit behind in commenting on all news pinstripes, so I thought I'd catch up by posting ...
