Yanks should say no thanks for Santana Links9
By the time 2008 rolls around, the Johan Santana Rumor Mill will get cranked up again. The latest bit of speculation is that Minnesota would accept a package of Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Jeff Marquez for their lefty ace. I’m sure that sounds acceptable to many fans. But, for a second, look at the bigger picture. Are the Yankees developing their kids to play them or trade them? ... [link]

Passing on Johan
Published 12/27/2007 by StatsGuru at Baseball Musings
Peter Abraham gives his reasons why the Yankees should pass on Johan Santana : Spend the money on draft picks, Dominican shortstops and Taiwanese pitchers. Go find kids in Korea, Australia, Venezuela and everywhere else. Hire more scouts and go see every junior college prospect in Texas. Go find the next Santana, don't trade for the old one. The Yankees do have time on their side. The Twins, of course, run the risk that Hughes turns out to be so good next season that there's no reason for the Yankees to trade him. They also run the risk that Santana and a healthy Liriano have ...

Clemens and Santana: newsmakers for very different reasons
Published 12/27/2007 by Dave & Aziz Nekoukar at NJ.com: Pride of the Yankees
... . Classy, Roger. Very classy. One non-Clemens nugget comes from Pete Abe's blog , as he writes that the new Santana rumor that surfaced recently -- that the Twins would accept a lower-tier package of Hughes, Jeff Marquez, and Melky -- should just be ignored. He wonders if the Yankees are going to keep these kids, or just play them to trade them: Trade these guys now and the message is pretty clear: The Yankees are only paying lip service to development. This isn't trading a few B-level prospects for Bobby Abreu in July. This would be an old-school Yankees move. We tend to ...

Abraham: Yanks should say no thanks for Johan Santana
Published 12/27/2007 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
Abraham: Yanks should say no thanks for Johan Santana Yanks to go cold turkey on Santana? Big Boy Pete takes a look. It’s their money, not ours. But I sit there at the Stadium and listen. People cheer loudest for the players who came up in pinstripes. People respect A-Rod but they love Jeter. They wanted Clemens do well. They adored Andy Pettitte. Cashman has somehow made it cool for Yankee fans to care about Jose Tabata even though 99 percent of them have no idea what he looks like. Spend the money on draft picks, Dominican shortstops and Taiwanese pitchers. Go find kids ...

Thursday link dump
Published 12/27/2007 by ETVal at Valentine's Views
Since I'm not giving you anything original today, the least I can do is hunt around and show you what others are saying. So, here's a Thursday afternoon link dump for you. USA Today ranks the NFL's best play-callers. One thing I can tell you -- Kevin Gilbride of the New York Giants is not on this list. Still think the New York Yankees should mortgage the farm to get Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. I don't. Peter Abraham of the Journal News is a smart guy and he agrees with me. He lays out the case beautifullly for why the Yankees should pass on Santana in his ...

Platoon Vidro and Clement

If Jeff Clement isn't traded for Erik Bedard or Johan Santana, the Seattle Mariners should platoon him with current DH Jose Vidro. This would help the Mariners' lineup, bench and finances. If this platoon is put in place, it would likely make Vidro a free agent after next season. Check it out! Much more to read!

M's Still in on Bedard, Santana

The Seattle Mariners are still in talks with the Minnesota Twins about ace starter Johan Santana. It appears that Minnesota's price has come down slightly, so the Mariners may have a chance at this. Carlos Silva may be able to influence Johan too. Baltimore Orioles stud Erik Bedard has a pretty good chance of landing in Seattle, too. Tons more after you make the jump!
