... or Yusmeiro Petit but want to keep
A Few Bits of Tid

... * If you're following the Armando Benitez trade rumors, you've probably heard the name Yusmeiro Petit. A thumbnail profile: A Venezuelan in the Mets organization, Petit baffled scouts by dominating hitters with average stuff and landed on many top-100 prospect lists in 2003-2004. He was traded to Florida in 2005 as part of the Carlos Delgado trade and hasn't fared well since, either at AAA or in a short 26-inning stint last year with the Marlins. Hitters at the highest levels seem to have caught up to his stuff, but he turned 22 in November and has time to make adjustments. He's not an elite prospect anymore, but if the Giants land him for Benitez, it would be significant.

Pitcher Trade

... , with Jorge Julio traveling to Florida and Yusmeiro Petit heading to the desert. The Diamondbacks wanted any team that acquired Julio to pay his entire $3.6 million salary, but they made an exception for the low-revenue Marlins in order to get a better prospect. The Cardinals, Pirates and Devil Rays also had been interested in Julio, who was perhaps the most attractive reliever available on the trade market. Julio is an interesting pitcher. His major league strikeout numbers are very good, and his walks are okay. But his home runs are high. Dolphin Stadium should be a good park for a pitcher like that. Petit owns tantalizingly good minor league strikeout numbers. However, his rate goes down as he rises through the system . Is that real, or did he just rise too quickly? I'm guessing Arizona thinks the latter.
A Response to Mike A. on Tyler Clippard

Do you know who Yusi Petit is? The former Mets prospect that was traded to Florida, and most recently to Arizona? He’s the same kind of pitcher as Clippard: ace-type stats but average stuff. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but the odds are stacked against Clippard having prolonged success in the bigs. He’s going to get chances though, so he better be ready. I’ll leave it at that (at least he’s durable). Oh yeah,

... going to make the Mets really regret that trade. Baseball's landscape is littered with guys that had all the tools in the world but amounted to nothing in the major leagues. It's proven fact. Escobar isn't going to be the first, and he isn't going to be the last. Yusmeiro Petit, once a top notch Mets prospect who was traded for Carlos Delgado, and Gaby Hernandez, who was traded for Paul Lo Duca, have both found it significantly tougher after moving on to higher levels. Petit hasn't set the world on fire after a 9-3 season at Binghamton, and it's been ...
