ATP says it can't reopen Agassi drug case

The ATP Tour will not reopen a doping case against Andre Agassi even though he admitted to lying about using crystal meth in 1997. Agassi revealed in his recent autobiography that he failed a 1997 drug test, a result he says was thrown out after he lied by claiming he "unwittingly" took crystal meth. However, ATP chairman Adam Helfant said on Friday that there was no way to sanction the American retroactively since he has retired from tennis.

Djokovic leaving Adidas for new sponsor in '10

Novak Djokovic is leaving Adidas for Sergio Tacchini, the same brand worn by his idols. Djokovic said Saturday he has signed a 10-year sponsorship deal with the Italian company starting next year. He said "my own idols Pete Sampras and John McEnroe have won almost all titles ... wearing the Sergio Tacchini logo." The third-ranked Serb announced the deal on the eve of the ATP World Tour finals in London.

Del Potro to play at Queen's Club tournament

U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro will play at next year's Queen's Club tournament in an effort to improve his grasscourt game ahead of Wimbledon. The fifth-ranked Argentine beat Roger Federer in the U.S. Open final but has never advanced past the second round in three appearances at Wimbledon. Del Potro says "this is the perfect opportunity for me to improve my game on the surface. Many players have done well at Queen's in the past and then gone on to win at Wimbledon.

Ferrero is first Spain reserve for Davis Cup final

Spain captain Albert Costa has named Juan Carlos Ferrero as the first substitute for the defending champion's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic. Ferrero, who won singles matches in Spain's quarterfinal and semifinal victories, joins Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez in the squad for the Dec. 4-6 best-of-five series. Costa says that Ferrero's experience provides an addition that is "very important for the team.

Belgian tennis players Yanina Wickmayer and Xavier Malisse have asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn their one-year bans for missing drug tests. The CAS said Wednesday the players want to annul their suspensions for failing three times to report their whereabouts for unannounced drug-testing.

American Querrey on mend from accident

American Sam Querrey is back practicing for his return to the ATP Tour after he cut two muscles in his right forearm when he sat on a glass table that broke in Thailand. The world's 25th-ranked player said Tuesday he narrowly avoided damaging the nerve in his serving arm that would have ended his tennis career. Querrey hurt himself on Sept. 28 after practicing at the Thailand Open. He sat on a couch before going to take a shower.

More Americans are playing tennis, with Hispanics and blacks showing a marked increase. The U.S. Tennis Association said in a survey released Tuesday that 30.1 million people hit the courts this year. That's a 12 percent increase from 2008 and up 25 percent from six years ago. The survey showed participation grew in all age groups under 50 and within all ethnic groups.

Andy Roddick has reportedly lost his battle to be fit for the ATP World Tour finals. Roddick, ranked No. 6, has withdrawn from the eight-man end of season tournament which begins in London on Sunday, The Times of London and Spanish sports newspaper Marca said on their Web sites on Tuesday. Roddick has been struggling to overcome the knee injury that forced him to pull out of his match against Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening round of the Shanghai Masters last month.

Credit Suisse to sponsor Federer through 2019

Credit Suisse has signed a 10-year sponsorship deal with Roger Federer for an undisclosed sum. The Swiss bank says it will make a "significant annual contribution" to the Roger Federer Foundation, a charity founded by the tennis player to help disadvantaged children in Africa. Credit Suisse spokeswoman Daniela Haesler declined to say how much the sponsorship deal is worth, or how much would go to Federer's foundation. The bank pulled out as a Formula One sponsor last year.
