Simon beats Stepanek, awaits Federer result

Gilles Simon beat Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-4 Friday at the Masters Cup, then had to wait and see if he would advance to the semifinals. The match was essentially meaningless because Roger Federer was facing Andy Murray in the later match. Federer, the four-time Masters Cup champion, needed to beat Murray to advance. But if he lost, Simon would be through, regardless of what he had done against Stepanek. Simon beat Federer in their opening Red Group match.

Roger Federer lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to France's Gilles Simon in his first round-robin match Monday at the season-ending Masters Cup. It was Federer's first match since a sore back forced him out of his last tournament in Paris.
