Simon beats Stepanek, awaits Federer result

Gilles Simon beat Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-4 Friday at the Masters Cup, then had to wait and see if he would advance to the semifinals.

The match was essentially meaningless because Roger Federer was facing Andy Murray in the later match.

Federer, the four-time Masters Cup champion, needed to beat Murray to advance.

Simon beat Federer in their opening Red Group match.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Tennis, Gilles Simon, Radek Stepanek, Roger Federer, Andy Murray

Britain's Andy Murray reached the Masters Cup semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory Wednesday over Gilles Simon of France.

Murray was at his best on the key points, breaking Simon twice in each set and fending off seven of the Frenchman's eight break opportunities.

"It was one of my best matches in recent months," Murray said - quite a statement for a player who recently ran off a 14-match winning streak.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Tennis, Andy Murray, Gilles Simon

Federer loses to start Masters Cup defense

Roger Federer lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to France's Gilles Simon in his first round-robin match Monday at the season-ending Masters Cup.

It was Federer's first match since a sore back forced him out of his last tournament in Paris.

The second-ranked Swiss star faltered late in the second set with a rash of errors that allowed Simon to get back into the match. The ninth-ranked Frenchman was only added to the eight-man field when No. 1 Rafael Nadal withdrew with knee tendinitis.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Tennis, Roger Federer, Gilles Simon, Rafael Nadal

Federer set to defend Masters Cup title

Roger Federer doesn't like hearing himself announced as No. 2 in the world, and hopes his aching back doesn't hamper his pursuit of regaining the top spot.

"I just don't like the ring of it," the defending champion said Saturday with a smile on the eve of the season-ending Masters Cup. "It sounds a bit awkward to me. It is a challenge to get back to No. 1."

The round-robin tournament features the top eight players, and Federer will meet Gilles Simon of France on Monday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Tennis, Roger Federer, Gilles Simon

Federer to meet two Andys in Masters Cup

Defending champion Roger Federer will face Andy Roddick and Andy Murray in group play at the season-ending Masters Cup next week.

The draw Wednesday of the top eight players - using numbered fortune cookies - put Federer in the Red Group along with Gilles Simon.

The second-ranked Federer became the top seed when No. 1 Rafael Nadal withdrew because of tendinitis in his right knee. Nadal pulled out of the Paris Masters last week.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Tennis, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray, Gilles Simon, Rafael Nadal
