Ferrero is first Spain reserve for Davis Cup final

Spain captain Albert Costa has named Juan Carlos Ferrero as the first substitute for the defending champion's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic. Ferrero, who won singles matches in Spain's quarterfinal and semifinal victories, joins Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez in the squad for the Dec. 4-6 best-of-five series. Costa says that Ferrero's experience provides an addition that is "very important for the team.

Federer to face Del Potro after ATP Finals draw

Top-ranked Roger Federer has been drawn to face both U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray in the group round of the ATP World Tour Finals. Federer, who lost to Del Potro in the U.S. Open final, will also face Fernando Verdasco in the round-robin phase in Group A. Second-ranked Rafael Nadal was drawn into Group B on Wednesday with Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Robin Soderling.

A tired Andy Murray lost to Radek Stepanek 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 while a sluggish Rafael Nadal survived another three-setter in the third round of the Paris Masters on Thursday. Nadal overcame fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in 2 hours, 20 minutes, breaking twice in the last three games. Novak Djokovic and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga enjoyed more routine wins, while 2006 champ Nikolay Davydenko lost but secured one of the two last spots in the ATP World Tour Finals this month.

Former No. 1 Marat Safin's career is over after a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 loss to Juan Martin del Potro in the second round of the Paris Masters. The 29-year-old Safin, a two-time Grand Slam title winner, put on a solid performance on center court Wednesday but was unable to overcome the U.S. Open champion. Safin, a three-time winner in Paris, captured the 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open among 15 singles titles. He has said he'll quit after this season.
