Before I let my giddiness get the best of me, here is a disclaimer. I know that the Cardinals current five-game winning streak has come against the lowly Pirates and Padres and that the rest of this month’s schedule (four at home with Milwaukee, three on the road against the Mets and four on the road against the Braves) will be a much better gauge of how good this team really is.

My calendar tells me it’s mid-July, the dog days of summer. In the sports world, that means baseball’s trade deadline is right around the corner, NFL training camps will be popping up any day now, and the Olympics begin in only a few weeks. We just finished watching a historic NBA Finals, a classic Wimbledon final, and a never-ending MLB All-Star game.

While David Beckham is most likely enjoying a romantic honeymoon with French footballer Zinedine Zidane, it was Landon Donovan who got the shaft at the 2008 ESPY awards. Who am I to question the great and powerful ESPYs? While David Beckham is likely the prettiest player in the MLS (as evident by the ESPY nod), I don’t think you can hand over the Best Player award to Becks so casually

World Cup 2010 USA?

The 2010 World Cup has been scheduled to take place in South Africa, but as of late FIFA has made it clear that that they do have a plan B . They say it’s necessary in case of a natural disaster, but it’s most likely because South Africa is having problems dealing with rampant crime, stadiums that are being delayed , and the possibility of random power outages.

A Business Decision

Last week were reminded that sports are nothing more than a business. Elton Brand supposedly had an agreement to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers, only to sign a five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Some people were shocked, but they shouldn’t have been. Remember, it’s a business.
