All Stars And Stuff

Just a quick note on the ASG - I've been asked of my opinion of the starters or who the reserves should be by a few people but I am going to hold off until the full rosters are released. Two quick notes though: 1 - As they try to get every team represented in the ASG, the Rangers rep is highly likely going to be Hank, despite his recent struggles. However, I wouldn't be shocked if Rozy got a spot due to his 11 goals and the East's weak defensive corps. 2 - West starting goaltender Roberto Luongo opted not to play to be with his pregnant wife. Mirtle, who already picked his All Stars, gives Luongo's spot to Chris ...

HOCKEY BRAWL! HOORAY!
Published 1/10/2008 at With Leather - Sports news and gossip for people who are all, like, "Whatever."
Apparently Russia's hockey league is just like its attempt at a free market: a great deal more violent and unregulated than its American counterpart. This video needs some serious editing, by the way.  Before the explosive beat-down two minutes in, there's just a lot of standing around -- someone has a bloody face, and people are technically participating, but you can tell they're not really into it.  Kind of like sex with your girlfriend.  [James Mirtle]

From Russia, With Fists [NHL Closer]
Published 1/10/2008 by Leitch at Deadspin
The NHL Closer is written by Greg Wyshynski, of The FanHouse and The Fourth Period. He is also the author of Glow Pucks And 10-Cent Beer. Enjoy. Russian hockey leagues are as much of a killjoy for fighting as the instigator rule, with automatic suspensions for anyone that drops the gloves. So what happens when everybodyeverybody drops the gloves? Four minutes of bench-clearing bliss, complete with former NHL scrubs, goalie fights and a referee doing his best Kevin Bacon from "Animal House," screaming the Russian equivalent of "Remain calm! ALL IS WELL!" Seriously, I haven't seen Ruskie carnage like ...

Massive Hockey Fight In Russian Super League
Published 1/10/2008 at FanIQ Blog
When 387 penalty minutes are handed out after a fight, that earns a mandatory sport in the FanIQ Blog whether it's in the NHL or Russia. The "dirtiest game is Russian ice hockey history" - which is saying a hell of a lot, if you ask me - started after AK Bars Kazan scored a late goal to the displeasure of the opposing Chelyabinsk.  A delicious mass brawl ensued. One can assume the fight was a result of game-long antagonizing on both ends, but I'm pretty sure it was just frustration out of not being able to spell anyone's name.

School’s Back

Yes, for both myself and those bowl game fellows you’ve been watching for the past few weeks, school is back. In order to not get too excited about this whole writing bit, I’ll keep this post at a YouTube clip. This is of a Russian league hockey game from Tuesday. The Russians apparently don’t fight in their home country while on ...

Bench-Clearing Brawls

Of all the hockey fights we’ve seen, this has got to be the best. You definitely won’t see this kind of action in the NHL, assuming you can find a channel that’s actually broadcasting NHL games still. I especially like the very end where the guy from the black team disrespects a white team jersey and gets hammered by another white team guy! Enjoy!

Today is Canada Day, which means my Canadian pal Liz is hosting a cookout in her yard this evening. I plan to make Nanaimo bars for the occasion, whoop-whoop. Canada Day also means the Blue Jays will be wearing special holiday jerseys — or they would be, if they were playing at home. But for the second consecutive year, they’re spending July 1st on the road. Of course, it’s not as though the holiday jerseys from previous years have been things of beauty, as you can see here, here, here, here, and here (all those pages courtesy of Bill Henderson’s awesome jersey ...
