this was a complete and utter travesty, theres no other way to say it, the officials blew the game for a bunch of teenagers who worked their tail off against a superior team.  they need to change this rule so that the penalty is assessed at kickoff and not during the PAT.  This way the refs can hold onto the integrity of the penalty, while at the same time ripping the game away from the team.

Saturday Shuffle: Curb Your Enthusiasm Edition
The Red Zone Report — For a weekend that was supposed to be an ‘in-between’ week of college football action, this weekend turned out to be more than worth watching. There are some things that I’m going to run through in greater detail in separate articles over the next couple of days, and there are some things that I’m saving for Monday’s Red Zone Rewind, but here are a few notable Sluggish Saturday for Buckeyes: Underestimating one’s opponent can be a lethal mistake sometimes. Whether it was underestimation, the absence of Chris Wells, or looking ahead to next week, Ohio State didn’t bring their ‘A’ game today ...

5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON SATURDAY
The World of Isaac — 5. If you're happy and you know it, throw the ball in the air? Actually, probably not a good idea, it may cost your team a win... 4. Befriend the longsnapper or it could be a painful season 3. Knowshon Moreno not only has the best name in college football but he might have the best move thus far this year 2. Maybe the Spartans found a replacement for Devin ...

Jake Locker Touchdown Run, Controversial Celebration Penalty [BYU vs Washington Highlights]
FanIQ Blog — I brought this up earlier today, but wanted to reiterate my frustration and share the video in case you missed it. Washington desperately needed a big win for their coach Ty Willingham and just for the program in general which has struggled mightily over the last five years. With the 15th ranked BYU Cougars in town, emotions were high in hopes of pulling off a big upset. Down seven points with 3:31 remaining, sophomore quarterback Jake Locker orchestrated a 17 play, 76 yard touchdown drive capped by his 3 yard run with :02 seconds remaining. Understandably thrilled and caught up in the ...

No Doubt About It; The Correct Call Was Made
In The Bleachers - A College Football Blog and Podcast — It was another great day of college football, but one game had a little bit of controversy at the end of it. Washington’s quarterback Jake Locker scored a touchdown late in their game with BYU to get the Huskies within a point. Locker then proceeded to throw the ball high in the air and draw an excessive celebration penalty. With the ball located on the 18 yard line, Washington could not convert on the extra point as BYU blocked it and won the game. I have heard it all from people, the ref wanted to be the center of attention, Locker was just excited…etc. The official did ...

NCAA Wants Players To Be Emotionless Zombies
SPORTSbyBROOKS — It’s almost 24 hours later, and it’s still hard to believe how badly Washington got screwed at the end of their game against BYU. I know I shouldn’t be shocked by a blown call by a Pac-10 officiating crew (the Tweedledums of the college football world) in the Pacific Northwest ( there is precedent after all), but I still am. Even more shocking: the blown call went against the Pac-10 team. Washington vs BYU Here’s what happened - Washington’s Jake Locker scored on an amazing scramble with two seconds left to bring the Huskies to within one point of the Cougars. As Ty Willingham appeared to be signaling an all-or-nothing two-point conversion ...

Don't Believe the Hype: Unsportsman Like Conduct
Saturday Sound Offs-The Blog for the College Football Junkie — There is a buzz about the BYU slim victory over a medicore Washington Husky team. BYU's defense proved itself to not be very good and frankly the game should not have even been this close, because BYU running back Harvey Unga fumbled at the one which would have put BYU up by two touchdowns, or just look at BYU's defense on that last drive that let Washington's Jake Locker get a first down on a fourth and ten broken play that allowed Locker to run for the first down. ...

NCAA Needs to Change Celebration Rule that Burned Jake Locker and Washington
Larry Brown Sports — ... or costing Tyrone Willingham his job — the Huskies had 59 minutes to win the game — but they did get screwed by the penalty at the end. Still, how hard is it to hold your blocks for a half second on a field goal?? And in case you haven’t seen the sequence, check out the video from the game to judge for yourself: Video of the finish via Ballhype.

How To Celebrate A Touchdown
Five Tool Tool - The Sports Blog That Loves You Back — College football officiating covered itself in glory this weekend, as the ending of the Washington-BYU game was compromised by the decision of the refs to give an unsportsmanlinke conduct call for this play. Please view, if you haven't seen it already. ...

U Dub got Fd in the A
Mac Gs World — The BYU/Washington game last Saturday first caught my eye because of 20 hot sorority girls celebrating UDub's first TD. The game was back and forth with both team's crowds being really into the action. It appeared someone had spiked the BYU fans drinks with caffeine. ...

Was Jake Locker’s TD celebration too much?
Sports Crackle Pop — Should the refs have let the Washington Huskies Jake Locker TD celebration go uncalled? You make the call.

Profiles in Disillusion: So much for Mountaineers' Mr. Nice Guy
Dr. Saturday — Conquered favorites and other notables picking up the pieces of shattered ambition this week: We, uh, may have made a huge mistake. West Virginia only beat East Carolina by 41 points in '07, so it's not altogether surprising following a 62-point swing in just one year that the Charleston Gazette's Dave Hickman has to remind 'Eer fans that, yes, the sun will come up tomorrow (although even a level-headed, bespectacled columnist might have his doubts when he files that column at midnight, when the smoke from the Appalachian couch fires is blotting out the heavens). Not surprisingly, Michigan obsessive, noted RichRod ...

All Out Blitz - Week 2
Intentional Foul — Welcome to the second week of All Out Blitz, IF’s weekly look at world of college football. After what looked like a ho-hum week, match-up wise, it turned out to be anything but. East Carolina? Leading the way was Dr. Lou’s son, Skip and his East Carolina Pirates. After absolutely smashing the West Virginia Mountaineers, 24-3, the Pirates entered the national rankings in the top 15 and rightfully so. In their last three victories, dating back to last season, the Pirates have played and beaten three ranked teams in impressive fashion. In fact, the Pirates have been so good ...

Coach Stoops avoids Pac-10 officiating questions
Oklahoma Sooners Football Blog — Oklahoma Sooner Football Articles and Notes Coach Bob Stoops on Pac-10 officiating: Coach Stoops today, commented on last weekend's Pac-10 officials controversial call. "Hey, that's the way it is," Sooners' Coach Bob Stoops said on Monday's Big 12 coaches' conference call, "so we're going to go play and hopefully play as well as we can." Asked if Stoops even saw the play in question? "I did," Stoops said. "But for me to comment on it wouldn't be appropriate." (LA Times) Pac-10 Conference officiating crew will work Saturday's game against Washington. Stoops ...

Tyrone Willingham Loves Pac-10 Officiating
Intentional Foul — Washington Huskies coach Ty Willingham was asked about his thoughts on the Washington/BYU ending that is the currently haunting college football. Surprisingly, Willingham was very generous with his praise for the Pac-10 officiating crew and the now-famous call against his quarterback, Jake Locker that directly effected the outcome of the game. And by “very generous with his praise,” I mean he was pretty disgusted in the whole matter. But first, the play in question: By now, it’s obviously been determined that, by rule, the ...

ECU fined for very rational exuberance
Dr. Saturday — You might remember East Carolina's upset of West Virginia waaay back on Saturday, and at some point this might have even seen what happened to a handful of ECU students who decided to celebrate good times on the field (heads up: some brief PG-13 language): It got much rougher than that, at least for one unlucky kid. As a veteran stormer who's met stadium security face-to-face while wrapped around a goal post he couldn't let go of if he wanted to, the Doc says with confidence that a hands-off observation will suffice in these cases -- as you can see, it's not like a handful of ...

Two Horrible Teams, One Cup
Amphibious Sports Duo — This Saturday at 3:00 the University of Washington Huskies will face the Washington State University in Pullman, Washington to decide the winner of the Apple Cup. This rivalry goes back 108 years when the first game was played to a 5-5 tie in 1900. This will be the 101st game in the series and it features both teams in the absolute dungeon of football relevance. The Huskies are 0-10 and the Cougars are 1-10. Despite the putrid performances by both teams this season, a victory in this game will be viewed as memorable as if a Rose Bowl berth was on the line. I personally can't wait to watch this game. The fans of both teams should be in a frenzied ...

YouTube Thursday -Leaning Horizontally Out Of The Open Car Door Of The Volvo Doesn't Have The Same Ring
California Golden Blogs — Anytime I think of Washington, I think of the 2006 game.  I try not to think of the 2007 game, that one sucked.  But man, 2006.  Oh man, 2006.  That was just, well, amazing.  Ya, sure, the first 3 quarters weren't the best.  Fair enough.  But who cares.  The sweet embrace of nostalgia lets me forget all that.  And only remember the end of the 4th quarter and the OT.  And, of course, this: Also, we've started again with that posting.  Check it:  Interview with Gary Tyrrell, Women's B-Ball Primer.  Beastmode. ...

If Jim Tressel ran the world, toeing the line would be crossing it
Dr. Saturday — When it comes to excessive celebration, some coaches think officials are a little too loose with their flags -- take Cal's Jeff Tedford, for example, who recently called the critical personal foul against Jake Locker in Washington's last-second loss to BYU in September a "ridiculous" application of the rule. On the other hand, there's Jim Tressel, who had a somewhat different opinion: "If they err, I think they should err on the side of throwing the flag," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "You're supposed to hand the ball to the official. A couple [of penalties] that were called were close, but guys see that and if ...

An Open Letter to the NCAA
The D3 Experience — Dear NCAA football rules committee: What the hell, guys? I’ve spent the first few months of the offseason in the weight room getting ready for next season. The lifting itself is secondary, it’s what I’ve been doing in between sets that’s important. What might that be, you ask? Why, I’ve been creating celebration dances for all of my possible opportunities to succeed next season. I had been making considerable progress until I read this story on ESPN.com about how Coach Bellotti at Oregon has complained enough to make the committee he chairs (the one responsible for the biggest buzzkill of ...

Leave the Taunting Rule Alone
In The Bleachers - A College Football Blog and Podcast — With nothing of substance going on between LOI Day and the start of Spring Practice; it’s the time of the year where the potential rule changes come into light. As you remember, the past few years the NCAA has been tinkering with the clock rules. The NCAA made the mistake of allowing the clock to start when the ball was kicked off and on the ready for play after a change of possession. Both of those rules were put in to speed up the game, but in the end they were nixed after a year because…in all honesty, they were stupid rules. In 2009, the NCAA is going down the path to having another stupid rule enter the books. The NCAA rules ...

Wait... You Want Them To Do What?
Maize n Brew — I know this isn't a breaking issue, but there just simply isn't that much else to discuss at the current juncture, and apparently the NCAA and American Football Coaches Association had nothing better to do with their time recently either...   College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note. As part of a sportsmanship initiative, the American Football Coaches Association and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange teamwide handshakes on the field before kickoff. Grant Teaff, executive director of the AFCA and former Baylor coach, says college ...

College Football Officials Out To Create Race Of Endzone Cyborgs
Amphibious Sports Duo — I believe it was the great governor of California that said "Desire is irrelevant, I am a machine." When it comes to college football players, the officials would like to see the same emotionless reaction when a young man and his teammates score a touchdown that could potentially be game-winning in a contest that the schools and the conference are making millions on through television rights and advertisements and millions of dollars is being gambled on. As Orson of EDSB put it: "...mostly white, middle-aged men judging the intent of young black men’s pantomime following emotional and exhilarating moments in sporting competition." But lo! ...

UW-BYU Officiating Controversy Not Going AwaySPORTSbyBROOKS
The Pac-10 probably hoped that all this hubbub over the end of Saturday’s Washington-BYU game ( read this if you’ve been living in a cave and don’t know what’s going on) would blow over and everyone would be more than happy to put it behind them and move on. But you don’t know Terry Bowden very well, do you Pac-10? Bowden’s scathing criticism of the ...
