CBC Looks at Hockey Blogging
Published 12/2/2007 by David M Singer at The Ice Block
CBC had a pregame HNIC feature about hockey blogging and some bloggers, including Japers’ Rink, On Frozen Blog, James Mirtle and the KK Empire. The Youtube vid above is from KK, who had the video up quickly.

Analyzing The Hockey Blogosphere
Published 12/2/2007 by Scotty Hockey at Scotty Hockey
So Hockey Night In Canada had a segment on hockey bloggers and, somehow, they left me out. I know, I know, its shocking! But seriously, in a five minute piece and three minute two-way (interview), they pretty much brushed over the entire segment of hockey bloggers who are, in fact, diehard fans. They concentrate on detailing the Caps bloggers and other writers who are either serious journalists or play them at night. If you want to concentrate on that portion of the blogosphere, fine, but don't ignore and even belittle the fan writers - which they did, and even did so sounding like old farts describing this whole new world on that there inter-web. ...

HNIC Spotlights Bloggers

Last week we had an interesting discussion going about bloggers and journalists and all that good stuff, with a lot of good points made. It's a tricky subject but one I think bears revisiting from time to time, especially since all of us have such varied experiences as bloggers. ...

Blogger Night In Canada
Published 12/2/2007 by The Forechecker at On the Forecheck
There was a very nice piece yesterday on Hockey Night in Canada about the rise of hockey blogs, focusing in particular on the group centered around the Washington Capitals (where owner Ted Leonsis has fostered their growth), and ending with host Ron McLean giving some ...

They Have Hockey Blogging On Computers Now
Published 12/2/2007 by GC at Can't Stop The Bleeding
Though I have no quarrel with the Washington Capitals’ enlightened treatment of my blogging friends, perhaps, Mr. Ewell, the reason there was barely any coverage of your team’s coaching change might have something to do with said announcement being made on Thanksgiving day.  (video link courtesy The Ice Block)

Bloggers on HNIC

Today’s must see video (keep an eye out for IwoCPO near the start of the bloggers segment): It’s always good to see bloggers get such good press. Hopefully having Ron MacLean and Elliot Friedman talk about blogging will make some people sit up and take notice. I’m sorry for not posting on the game, but I went to Holland to watch it and spent the night there due to the weather. I didn’t get back until this evening and have to do some school-related things. ...

Puttin' On the Foil - A Weekly NHL Recap 12/2
Published 12/3/2007 by Sean at Sean Leahy's Going Five Hole
Ho, ho, ho! Christmas and Hannukah are within reach. New Year's and the Winter Classic are right around the corner. Can you believe how quick the season is going? We're two months in already and patterns are beginning to develop. That number one goalie you planned on riding to the playoffs isn't playing so hot (Pittsburgh Penguins). That hot seat just got hotter for your general manager (Atlanta Thrashers). That so-so roster you had coming into the season is producing quite nicely (New York Islanders). That bag full of money you spent in the off-season isn't working out yet like you had planned (New York Rangers). It's close to becoming ...

Adventures in broadcastingHockey Night in Canada meets the blogosphere
Published 12/3/2007 by James Mirtle at james mirtle
W ell, first of all, I thought the piece on Hockey Night in Canada last night was a terrific introduction to the blogosphere and the press box issue that we here have been batting around for some time now. It's really incredibly difficult in a short piece like that to make blogging relevant to such a wide, disparate audience, but Elliotte Friedman and company do a nice job. We meet some of the particulars, hear from Ted Leonsis and the Pro Hockey Writers' Association, and afterward get a nice run through of a few sites by the venerable Ron MacLean. It's that last bit that I believe is the single most significant part of the ...

This post is brought to you by the Barenaked Ladies. One Week -- how long the Barenaked Ladies mattered in the United States. And hey, they're from Canada. HNIC and the Blogosphere

As Much, If Not More | Main December 02, 2007 HNIC and the Blogosphere I've received a fair amount of mail as a result of Ron Maclean mentioning this site on Hockey Night in Canada. I appreciate all the kind comments. (If you missed the piece, the video is here . How did it feel to suddenly hear my name in the broadcast? It was surreal. You could have knocked me over with a feather.) A few points about the piece in general: Kudos to the CBC for doing the story at all. There have not been many generally positive stories about the blogosphere - or even references to it - in the mainstream media. The part of the feature on the ...

The CBC Is Aware Of The Interweb
Published 12/3/2007 by Parkes at And Your Kids Too
Hockey Night In Canada had a report on blogging in hockey during its pregame show on Saturday night and it was actually really positive. It's become very easy for the mainstream media to generally dismiss bloggers for being the diseased carriers of infectious misinformation. Obviously this claim is nothing more than a cop out to keep their own readership unenlightened while offering their own certified "blogs" which, with a few exceptions, are nothing more than opinion pieces not interesting enough to print. Anyway, the CBC has done a great job at connecting with bloggers referencing their stories by linking to them on their site. ...

HNIC talks hockey blogosphere
Published 12/4/2007 by Christy Hammond at Behind the Jersey
This past Saturday, the HNIC crew covered both sides of the discussion surrounding hockey bloggers in the press box. The clip was around 8 minutes and 15 seconds in length, which you can view below. Personally, I thought HNIC did a great job showing viewpoints from both sides. It was great to put some faces to some names (like IwoCPO @ Abel to Yzerman). I also loved seeing Ron MacLean go, “There’s James Mirtle. Look at that, Hockey Night in Canada - he’s talking about us!” Both James and Tom Benjamin have some great thoughts/reactions to the ...

Atlanta Thrashers and Blogging
Published 12/5/2007 by The Falconer at Do The Thrashers Have Large Talons?
I feel a bit guilty blogging about bloggers since I've been a bit of an absentee writer of late. This is a busy time of year in my day job and I've been sick a bit lately. On top of all that, the Thrashers play of late has neither inspired nor outraged me so I have less to get off my chest than earlier in the season. ...

How Should the Thrashers Handle Bloggers?
Published 12/6/2007 by The Falconer at Southeast Shootout
This weekend I was watching Hockey Night in Canada on my CenterIce package and they had a piece on NHL bloggers in between games. They took a camera to the Washington Capitals game and had some interview clips from prominent Caps bloggers. It was nice to put a human face on these virtual commentators. The Capitals have created an open door policy for bloggers in their press box because they do not receive the coverage they desire from the local broadcast and print news media (and having lived in DC for several years I would agree with that assessment). Craig Custance discussed the Thrashers blogger policy in his beat blog at ...

Blogging on the beat
Published 12/11/2007 by James Mirtle at james mirtle
When the discussion turns to the media and bloggers, as it did on Hockey Night in Canada two Saturday's ago, it's often framed as "the media v. bloggers" — two sides diametrically opposed. That's true, at least to a certain extent, but what's also true is that, more and more, the media is successfully moving into the blogosphere and, for lack of a better term, joining the conversation. Craig Custance is a great example. The Thrashers beat writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution , one of the largest newspapers in the U.S., Custance has built quite a following on his blog . He's a relatively young guy (31) who has embraced the blog ...

Interview with the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle
Published 1/19/2008 by PJ Swenson at Sharkspage
A busy James Mirtle, of the Globe and Mail, AOL Fanhouse, and his own hockey blog, took the time to answer a few questions about the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Ferguson, blogs, and the Anaheim Stanley Cup Championship's impact on hockey in California. [Q] Can you describe your background in journalism, which papers you have worked for and how long you have been reporting on hockey? [JM] My first real job in sports journalism was as an intern at The Hockey News when I first moved to Toronto, and that was a terrific, welcoming place to start. From there, I took a job out at a small paper in Alberta for a summer, ...

Mainstream media and bloggers
Published 3/1/2008 by Dario at In The Cheap Seats
David may be out of the office but surely he forgot I still have the key.  So, now that I have free reign of the place I’m going to rummage through his medicine cabinet, raid the fridge and probably throw a party until the cops show up.  Well, at least my best blogger equivalency of doing so by jumping in to the media vs. blogger debate.  Sorry for the mess DD. It’s pretty evident at this point that both bloggers and main stream media are going to lock horns from time to time.  It’s not going to go away, especially with sports blogs.  I’m not the first to address the issue and I won’t be the last.  So those of you with an interest in such things may ...
